Catawba Valley R/Cers — Fourth of July Floyd Battle 2006

Mary Catherine Thornburg, secretary for the Catawba Valley R/Cers, contributed the following information and pictures.

The Catawba Valley R/Cers hosted its annual Fourth of July Floyd Battle 2006. Three hundred and sixty-four days out of the year we do our utmost to avoid hitting each other's airplanes and to be careful not to have too many in the air at once. Midairs are not what we want to do. Clipping wings is not the norm, but on July 4 the rules change.

We get out our foam Floyds with 20‑foot streamers and have at it. We have up to 10 and sometimes more Floyds in the air at once. The object is to cut one of the other Floyd streamers, but if you lose your streamer, your Floyd is at risk. Losing yours makes your Floyd faster as you try to get someone else's streamer while keeping away from other Floyds. The last one in the air is the winner, but who keeps up with that? We are all looking for the most explosive crash!

These are experienced pilots whose main objective is to take out someone else's Floyd. Of course, there are others who fly way too high, not wanting to lose their $3 airplane. Who understands that? It is interesting to realize how hard it is to hit another object flying in the air, but when it happens it is a sight to behold.

This was the fifth year in a row we have had our Floyd battle. Each year the crowd gets bigger and more Floyds show up. This year was our best, as always. Our visitors are always amazed at the good time we all have. Well, duh! That is what we're supposed to be doing: having fun, although it was 90°F or more in the sun and we were all melting.

There was also a training session with a new kid and his trainer. We ate hot dogs and ice cream in between flights and everyone went home happy!

Metrolina Control Line Society — 25th anniversary

The Metrolina Control Line Society had its 25th anniversary contest in October 2006. The members celebrated at the club field in Waymer Park in Huntersville, North Carolina. Included are some pictures depicting the event. This club is one of the oldest control-line clubs in the state. The event normally has entries from nearly all of the surrounding states and as far away as Ohio, Delaware, and New Jersey. Who thinks interest in control line is waning?

Until next time, go teach a kid to fly!
