THE TRIAD AERO MODELERS held its
annual swap meet at the fairgrounds in
Lexington, North Carolina, this past spring.
This is one meet you want to attend.
There are carts and members to help bring
your merchandise in to set up. The members
also help you load up your leftover
merchandise after the event. They said “This
is Southern hospitality.”
In the spring, modelers typically try to
stock up for the upcoming flying season and
renew friendships for the coming season.
What we really do is “swap” with one
another. The event is a great opportunity to
trade for or buy something you need.
The Mid-Atlantic Radio Kontrol Society
(MARKS) in Fruitland, Maryland, had a
quiet field for a weekend during the
inaugural MARKS HLG (Hand-Launched
Glider) Contest on May 21 and 22. The
event was sanctioned by AMA and the
Eastern Soaring League (ESL) and followed
F3K rules. There were 15 contestants, and
the club members and participants had a
positive experience. The club plans to hold
the event again next year.
Some contestants came from as far away
as North Carolina and New York, with
airplanes weighing roughly 9 to 10 ounces.
The rounds were approximately 10-minutes
long and consisted of different tasks, such as
reaching specific flight times or as close to
or over as possible. The gliders were
powered only by the initial toss by the pilots
and reached amazing heights with little
effort thanks to the special design of these
airplanes.
It is amazing how fast these aircraft can
climb. One temporarily disappeared into a
cloud during a 5-minute task
