AMA News: District IV-2013/02

The following story comes from Tom Bennion, safety officer for the Davis Bridge Aeromodelers in Parkton, North Carolina.

Event details

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the Davis Bridge Aeromodelers (DBA) hosted a display and flight demonstration for Cub Scout Pack #329, Cape Fear Council, Lumber River District. Cub Scout Pack #329 is a new pack located in Parkton, North Carolina. Although it was Mother's Day weekend, the turnout from Davis Bridge Aeromodelers members was strong.

Participants

  • Thirteen Davis Bridge members and one guest member, Vince Warren of the Fayetteville RC Club.
  • A total of 32 airplanes were fielded for display and flying.

Activities

After a short introduction by the Davis Bridge safety officer, the Scouts were given an opportunity to walk among the airplanes for a closer look at the models and to talk with club members. All of the Cub Scouts and their Scoutmasters were then moved to a safe area while some members demonstrated flying skills.

Using one trainer aircraft, each Cub Scout was escorted to the flight line and given an opportunity to fly the trainer using a buddy-box system.

Because the event was relatively small, DBA members were able to spend more time with each Cub Scout and the pack leaders.

Souvenirs and follow-up

Before the event, the Davis Bridge Aeromodelers ordered 15 Starfire Gliders from the AMA's Cloud 9 Museum Store to give each Scout a souvenir. The Scouts were challenged to build the airplanes at one of their meetings and then hold a contest to see whose glider could fly the farthest. The pack accepted the challenge and will report the results.

The Cub Scouts enjoyed the activities, and the Davis Bridge members did as well.
