The Omahawks Radio Controlled
Airplane Club (ORCAC) in Nebraska
is famous for its frequent float-flys that
display some amazing aircraft, and are
well attended by the public and fellow
fliers. Richard Behrens sent me some
photos that are a good representation
of the aircraft that were there. Thanks,
Richard.
Much-used LT25 with Cunningham floats (Bob
Zitzlsperger).
Cub taxing out for takeoff (Crumley).
Einderdecker fly-by (Watts).
Our new associate vice president, Ed
Paasch, sent in an update about some
great fun in Mead, Nebraska:
The Western R/C Flyers club, charter
number 857, held its 23rd Annual Bud
Hall Memorial Giant Scale Fun Fly
at its beautiful flying field in Mead,
Nebraska, on August 11 and 12. The
fun-fly attracted dozens of pilots
from across eastern Nebraska. While
the primary focus of the event was
flying aircraft that met International
Miniature Aircraft Association
guidelines (60-inches-plus wingspan
biplanes, quarter-scale or larger
aircraft, or 80-inches-plus wingspan
monoplanes), pilots were encouraged to
fly whatever they brought to the field.
Pilots from Lincoln, Waverly,
Omaha, Fremont, and Blair flocked
to Mead for the weekend to enjoy
great flying, great food, and great
camaraderie. The Western R/C Flyers
club president, Rick Miller, was on
hand to man the grill, thus assuring that
every guest enjoyed perfectly cooked
bratwurst.
Rick also enjoyed some spirited
aerobatics with his Hangar 9 232 ARF
when not occupied with grilling duties.
Nelson Carpenter, Western R/C
Flyers vice president, displayed some
Scale flying prowess of his own with a
beautiful 0.91 four-stroke powered 80-
inch Piper Pawnee model.
Pilot Ryan Nelson from ORCAC
amazed the crowd with his high-wing
Pilatus ARF as he alternated between
performing scale aerobatics and seeing
how low and slow he could fly the
airplane—both right-side up and
inverted. Ryan performed more daring
aerobatics with his Giant Scale Yak 54.
John Wilman, from the Lincoln Sky
Knight’s Radio Control Club, wasn’t
to be outdone. He performed some
beautiful aerobatics of his own with his
Giant Scale Extra 330.
Large Scale models of all types were
on hand. Pilot Loren Blinde enjoyed
riding some thermals with his 4-M
Scale glider after being towed up into
the Midwestern sky by his Giant Scale
Wilga tow airplane.
Pilot Dean Copeland enjoyed some
spirited flying with his beautiful twinengine
Grumman F7F Tigercat model
and then added a big helping of Scale
aerobatics while flying his red and
yellow Monocoupe.
Jim Henley also enjoyed the best of
both military and civilian Giant Scale
flying, warming up with a few flights
on his Syssa-powered Great Planes
Super Stearman ARF before showing
off his beautiful Giant Scale Fairchild
PT-19 model.
The weekend was a culmination of
good weather and good times, with
Western R/C Flyers club members
enhancing their reputation as terrific
hosts. There was a variety of Giant
Scale aircraft of all types on hand, and
I thank the club members for making
all of their guest pilots feel warmly
welcomed to another one of the club’s
many terrific fun-fly events.
Is this Jim Henley showing off his PT-19 that
served us well as our World War II trainer?
Rick Miller, Western R/C Flyers club president,
operated the grill.
Let’s see, do I push or pull?
