MODEL AVIATION
THE MEMBERS of the Academy of
Model Aeronautics are the pathway to the
future of modeling and are committed to
making modeling the foremost sport/hobby
in the world.
If you are interested in the promotion,
development, education, advancement, and
the safeguarding of modeling activities,
and you want to be a part of the AMA,
then District X needs you. Two positions
are currently open for associate vice
president (AVP). A person is needed in the
Salt Lake City, Utah, area and another in
or near Phoenix, Arizona.
Contact Jim Giffin at (916) 760-8291,
or Mike Brown at (530) 540-3005.
Applicants need to be at least 19 years old
and a current AMA Leader Member.
One of the benefits of becoming an
AVP is getting to do things for your vice
president and the AMA such as presenting
AMA Leader Club awards.
Las Vegas, Nevada, AVP Greg Clemensen
made a seven-hour trip to present the
Cedar City Radio Control Club with the
Silver Leader Club Award. From Greg’s email,
it sounded like a good experience
that he and the club enjoyed.
If you are ever in the area, you might
look up this Silver Leader club. It is
located in the southwest corner of Utah,
only 180 miles north of Las Vegas.
The club’s Web club site states that
“Cedar City is home to some of the most
spectacular scenery in the world. This
offers some very unique and interesting
flying opportunities at an elevation of
approximately 5,800 feet above sea level.”
Silver is one of three levels of the
award clubs can achieve. If your club has
an interest in achieving a Gold, Silver, or
Bronze Leader Club award, look for PDF
document 708 in the Members Services
section of the AMA’s Web site at
www.modelaircraft.org/files/708.pdf.
Greg was also able to attend The Remote
Possibilities RC Club Presidents’ Day Fun-
Fly in Saint George, Utah.
I did not attend, but I would guess the ROTC
presented colors each morning.
As you can see from the aerial photo, the
event was well attended.
Scott Davis won Pilots’ Choice and
People’s Choice awards with this beautiful
Stearman.
There were warbirds and numerous
aerobatic Extras, Edges, Yaks, and more,
but not abandoned was this electric glider
seen here soaring through the thin
mountain air.
Always a joy to watch is a smooth knifeedge
pass.
Judging from the pictures on the club’s
Web site, this was a great event with an
even better turnout. I wish I could have
attended this one. I’m jealous, Greg.
