WHAT'S NEW? District X's newsletter!

Hi — Mike Brown here, District X Associate Vice President. By now many of you are aware of the new newsletter I started for the district. For those who are not, here's a little background.

I decided to start this newsletter because it would be a great way to notify the district's clubs and members about any new or existing programs offered by the AMA, such as:

  • a free year of AMA dues for every three new AMA members you sign up
  • grants to help with flying-field repairs

A newsletter is also a good way for clubs to advertise their events by showing pictures of gatherings they have held. Maybe by advertising your 2010 events in the newsletter (and showing last year's event pictures), you can help increase attendance — which equals more dollars for the treasury.

Referring to treasury funds, some clubs can qualify to receive as much as $1,000 from the AMA to hold a Take Off and Grow (TAG) event. Check TAG requirements in the AMA's PDF documents on the AMA website. Maybe you can even gain a new club member or two.

The District X newsletter should have a wide variety of content, such as:

  • building articles
  • features about a special way your club does something
  • a good, clean aviation- or hobby-related joke

Club success stories (such as holding a TAG event) or reports on getting a new flying field would be great. Maybe you need help finding a new field — I will publish anything that is positive about the hobby or the AMA itself.

An easy way to help at first would be to send pictures. Every club has members, or members have family or friends, who attend club events with a camera. Photographers like to see their work published, right? Ask them for a CD and either they or you can send it to me. Pictures can also be sent in an email (or several emails if necessary). Unlike a magazine, I can print nearly any size picture because this is a newsletter, but the larger the pixel count, the better the quality. Copying the pictures straight from the camera to a CD is fine with me as well.

Please include the club's name, event name, and a pilot count. If you want to submit a full article, that would be welcome as well.

On to what some of our members are doing

Although the weather was raw, cold, and windy on Saturday, December 19, the regulars of the East Bay Radio Controllers in Livermore, California, showed up to help those less fortunate at their Toys for Tots fun-fly. Ken Busse, club president, sent the photo and the news.

Ken said that Bob Donleavy was the CD (contest director) for this event and has been doing this for roughly 20 years—great job, Bob!

Events such as these bring out the best in all of us. It's another way we can help our communities.
