The 2013 AMA Expo has come and gone. If you were there, I’m sure you had a great time. The exhibitors and speakers made the three-day event great.
One of my favorite memories was awarding the San Fernando Valley Flyers (SVF) an AMA Award of Merit. The SVF calls the Sepulveda Basin its home. This field is located on Los Angeles city park land and is open to the public. Membership in the SVF is not required to fly there, yet the club has a roster of more than 370 members.
The club regularly hosts community, youth, and education days at its field. Take a page from the SVF’s playbook and give back to your community. It will build your membership and help secure your field.
Bob Messall, or as his friends call him, “Chief,” spent an entire career serving the Los Angeles County Fire Department. After Bob retired, he took up modeling, and has spent more than 25 years enjoying our sport. Bob decided he wanted to give back to the AMA, so he made plans in his estate to leave his large collection of historic model engines to the National Model Aviation Museum.
