The AMA Flying Site Development
Improvement Grant program
is designed to help fund AMA
Chartered Clubs that have spent or
intend to spend money on flying site
improvement projects. A portion of
AMA member dues are used to fund
this worthwhile program to help clubs
with 10% of the cost of their projects
with grants up to $5,000. This year,
only 18 clubs from 10 districts applied
for grants, requesting a total of $17,487,
which was less than the available funds.
Each club that applied was awarded a
grant.
In District I, only one club, R/C 1/4
Scale Modelers of Rhode Island, applied
for a grant. The club was awarded
the second highest grant of $3,500.
Congratulations to the club and all of its
members for taking on this ambitious
project.
The flying site was moved because
buildings and power lines were
encroaching on the runway, making it
difficult to fly and attract new members.
The club funded this project with $300
from each member, along with the
AMA grant money. The club may be

The corner of the property the runway occupies has an elevation change of nearly 15 feet. Filler material was brought into the area to level the strip,
and heavy equipment was used to build the retaining wall shown above.

able to return the members’ money in
the future through expected increased
income because of new memberships.
There is more than $30,000 available
for clubs that have a flying site
improvement project in mind for this
year or 2013. You can apply for a grant
at www.modelaircraft.org/files/712.pdf.
Your district vice president can help
your club with grant applications,
especially with advice on determining
the primary reasons for the site
improvements and the benefits
and value the club could expect by
completing the project. Think about
improving the value of our most
important resource, your AMA club
flying sites.
