140 MODEL AVIATION
I AM WRITING this column as winter
comes to a welcome end. The snow is finally
melting away, providing access to flying
sites for the start of our 2011 flying season.
In continuing AMA District I’s mission
objective of sponsoring a variety of flying
events, we have been working with clubs to
host and plan these events.
Two of our annual popular events have
been sanctioned and are advertised in this
column. In future columns expect to see ads
for other awesome events celebrating
AMA’s 75th Anniversary, including the new
Snap-A-Saugus 3D Showdown at the
Gardner Airport July 28-31.
Barry Schubert has retired as District
Contest Coordinator. On behalf of the AMA,
I would like to express our appreciation for
the six years and more than 700 sanction
applications that he has processed.
Barry has participated in the planning and
running of nearly all of the district-sponsored
events. He has accompanied me on AMA
trips throughout the country, helping out at
trade shows and providing advice on AMA
issues.
He will be retiring from Raytheon after
more than 40 years and will have more time
to enjoy his family, friends, and
aeromodeling activities. Good luck my
friend!
David Surwell has been appointed the
new District I Contest Coordinator. David is
a member of the New Hampshire Flying
Eagles and the Portland Prop Snappers clubs.
In the past 10 years he has served in nearly
every club officer position as well as a flight
instructor.
David considers himself an all-around
pilot enjoying all types of flying styles and
aircraft. He admits that for him the best part
of the sport is the camaraderie; making new
friends, and talking about their airplanes,
building, and flying techniques. We
welcome David to the District I officer team.
All sanction applications should be sent
to David Surwell, 24 Norwich Rd., Nashua
NH 03062. David’s telephone number is
(603) 888-2020 and his e-mail address is
[email protected].
