AVP manuals

I want to notify clubs in the district that I have a few extra Associate Vice President (AVP) manuals, which are a condensed version of Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) information and contacts. These manuals include a directory and come with a CD and a DVD of PowerPoint presentations. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Northern Virginia reports

Associate Vice President Ron King sent in two reports about happenings in northern Virginia.

Pilots invited to fly a demo at Doukenie Winery included (pictured left to right):

  • Pat Dunlap
  • Herb Weinberg
  • Gary Robinson
  • Dan Manson
  • Ross Baker
  • Dave Linthicum
  • Charlie Koustanis
  • Doug Cash
  • Marsh Dehart

The event was organized by Mark Franke and Don Manson of the Northern Virginia Radio Control (NVRC) club, and members from several other clubs jumped at the invitation.

The Doukenie Winery, located in Loudoun County, Virginia, features more than 500 acres of rolling vineyards nestled against the Blue Ridge Mountains. Despite a stiff breeze, the pilots put on a great show and have been invited to return.

While the pilots steered clear of the wine-and-cheese party until flight activities ended, our spouses were under no such restrictions and really enjoyed the local hospitality. Photo by Ron King.

Cub Scout Jamboree — PWCRCF

Prince William County RC Flyers (PWCRCF) member Bill Davis (second from left in the picture) explained the setup and inner workings of his large-scale Extra 300L to a group of Cub Scouts and their parents during a recent Cub Scout Jamboree in northern Virginia. The event attracted Scouts from around the region and the club performed continuous demonstration flights during the day.

WindWalkers Scout Day

Gary Stone, a member of the WindWalkers R/C club in Virginia, reported on a recent Scout Day event. The club signed 22 merit badges during the gathering, and because of the generosity of Awesome R/C hobby shop in Stafford, Virginia, was able to give away an electric aircraft complete with transmitter. The local newspaper covered the event.

Thanks and closing

I would like to thank all the AVPs, Contest Board members, frequency and safety coordinators, the webmaster, and the contest directors (CDs) who run events for District IV. Without all these volunteers, where would we be?

Go teach a kid to fly.
