Mid-South Vintage RC Society Fly-in (May 21-22, 2005)
Bob Harris reported on the second annual Mid-South Vintage RC Society (VRCS) Fly-in, May 21-22, 2005, which was a huge success. The weather was in the mid-70s with a beautiful blue sky and sunshine. We had 32 pilots and nearly 100 aircraft either on display or being flown.
The Vintage RC Society is an AMA Special Interest Group. We strive to keep the history of RC models from 1970 and before by both building and flying the vintage models. Some members even use the same radio gear from that time period. I guess you could say we are the history keepers! Check out the Web site at www.vintagercsociety.org.
Hal deBolt’s designs (this year’s model designer for VRCS) were well represented with several models both to scale and enlarged. Models ranged from the Live Wire Champ, Trainer, Rebel, and Interceptor all the way down to Bob Gardner’s Kitten, which carries Hal’s personal signature on the wing.
Flying began with Evan Doughty’s giant Quaker. Bob Bingaman brought his enlarged Lanzo bomber as well as his enlarged deBolt Cruiser. Bob Gardner from Canada came with his hangar of models including the “ruddervator-operated” Trixter Beam we have all heard about.
Beppe Fascione flew his Orion with a converted reed system and a Green Head K&B .45. It seemed that every type of vintage model control was represented, down to the galloping ghost and single-channel units. Ron Morgan was present with many of his models.
Spectators came from Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and Tennessee. Many younger pilots were astonished at the older radios on display and were curious to see them demonstrated. Thanks to those who took the time to show these newcomers some history.
Our Saturday night banquet was a blast with plenty of good food, laughs, and conversation. We could have talked all night. Next year we need to get a larger room!
Awards presented included:
- Concours: Beppe Fascione, Orion
- Best Hal deBolt Design: John Strickland, deBolt Live Wire Champ
- Best Finished Model: John Haffner, Kwik Fli II
- Best in Scale: John Johnson, J-3 Cub

The Mid-South Vintage Fly-in was a great success! A big thank-you to Ron Morgan and Art Schroeder for judging the Concours and a special thanks to Ralph and Patsy Tudor for the use of their superb flying field and all the hard work they have put into it. This year’s fly-in will be May 13-14. Please try to attend this great event of RC history. For more pictures, go to http://midsouthflyin.tripod.com.
Until next time, go teach a kid how to fly!
