ON MONDAY NIGHT, September 12, the
PoBoys PropTwisters of Indian Trail, North
Carolina, welcomed Cub Scout Pack 151 for
an RC demonstration. More than 50 Scouts
attended, along with 35 adult visitors. The
excitement never stopped from the time they
pulled in the driveway.
The club was well represented by pilots
and aircraft. Exhibitions ranged from
musically choreographed Stunt flying to
thermal Soaring with a two-meter glider. We
were pleased to have Carson West, one of the
Scouts who recently soloed at our field, fly his
trainer for his fellow Cub Scouts. Seeing one
of their own flying solo was a huge crowd
pleaser and Carson aced the landing.
Grand-prize winner Christopher with his new
airplane, donated by Michael Hill from Mint
Hill Hobby.

candy for the hungry Cub Scouts.

As in years past, we selected two Scouts to
fly a trainer using a buddy cord. The selection
process is done by dropping numbered ping
pong balls from an airplane, and then drawing
the winning numbers from a hat. This year
Mint Hill Hobby donated a complete Firebird
RC airplane package which was raffled during
the same ball drop.
The night concluded with a foamie and
micro helicopter demonstration and a candy
drop. Even though it was dusk when the
Telemaster released the candy, those kids
managed to find every piece. As they all
loaded into their cars, several fathers were
stating that they would be back with their sons
to further investigate this hobby.
Special thanks to Michael Hill, Jery Plyler,
Dave Collins, Carson West, Don Johnson,
Bob McKinley, David Brown, Abe Williams,
Steve and Joe Porter, and the rest of the
PoBoys for making this event such a success.
A special thanks goes to Mint Hill Hobby
for its generous prize donation.
On a visit to the high country of western
North Carolina, I visited the Watauga Aero
Modelers of Boone. The club’s field is an
abandoned race track. They are lucky to find a
place this level and nice in the mountains.
This weekend in November was cool but
nice and sunny, and many were out to enjoy
the sport of model aviation.
The pictures, courtesy of club president
Mitchell Shore, show that the members’
interests are varied and interesting. Mitchell
and the club members invite anyone in who is
in the area to come visit and fly with them.
The field is east of Boone off of U.S. 421.
