Goldberg Award
In 1983, Carl and Beth Goldberg asked the Academy of Model Aeronautics to help create an award to recognize people who work behind the scenes in the modeling movement. Called the Carl & Beth Goldberg Vital People Award, it is presented annually to “vital people in the background of the modeling movement whose efforts enhance the enjoyment of the hobby and whose accomplishments are seldom formally acknowledged.”
This year, Associate Vice President and District IV webmaster Steve Moulton awarded Frank Geisler the Goldberg Award and a check in the amount of $200. Congratulations, Frank!
Service Awards and Retirements
Tom Miller was awarded a plaque for his 22 years of service on the RC Aerobatics Contest Board. He has decided to retire and Dale Arnold is taking his place. If you see Tom, please thank him for his years of service and dedication to the hobby and sport.
Marshall McClung is retiring from the Helicopter Contest Board but was unable to attend the membership meeting at the Joe Nall event. He will be awarded his plaque for 15 years of service at a later date. Ben Minor is taking over for Marshall. Let’s wish them both well for the future. Thanks to all who keep the sport going.
Warbirds Over the Beach 2009
A unique event took place September 19–20, 2009, hosted by Tidewater Radio Control (www.flytrc.com) and held at the Military Aviation Museum (www.militaryaviationmuseum.com) in Virginia Beach, Virginia. More than 40 pilots displayed and flew in excess of 100 beautiful aircraft, including Roger Spoor’s Top Gun–competing Fw 190, powered by a Moki five-cylinder radial and flown by Steve Peckum. Mark Ward brought his 148-inch, four-engine B-17. Hundreds of spectators enjoyed watching warbirds of all sizes in flight.
Saturday’s weather was slightly overcast and windy, so flying was minimal for most pilots. Sunday’s weather improved and the flying was steady and exciting.
In addition to the great flying on the 4,880-foot grass runway, lunch was provided by Zooke’s Barbeque.
Each pilot’s landing fee included entrance to the Military Aviation Museum. The museum hosts more than 30 warbirds, including:
- P-51D
- P-40E
- B-25J
- PBY-5A
- T-28D
- P-26 Peashooter
- Fokker D.VII
- Fokker Dr.I
The Tidewater Soaring Club put on a flight demonstration with its full-scale soaring airplanes, and for an extra treat the museum’s YMF-2 Waco biplane was used as the tow aircraft.
Special thanks to CD Mark Ward and all of the Tidewater Radio Control Club volunteers for putting on a great event. Next year’s event should be bigger and better.
