Juan Montoya interview

NASCAR and former Formula 1 driver Juan Montoya was interviewed by AMA's Chris Brooks and Mark Benson, and other members of the media (see this issue’s cover story). Juan is an AMA member and he asked me if he needed to show his membership card. I told him no.

Juan flew two aerobatic airplanes he had never seen before and did an excellent job. He is currently working on his turbine waiver and has a few more flights to complete the process.

During the interview, I gave him an AMA shirt, AMA cap, and a District IV patch, which he appreciated very much. Juan is another well-known person involved in model aviation. He was very courteous and enjoyed the situation, as did I.

Mt. Elim RC Flying Club Fun-Fly

The Mt. Elim RC Flying Club held a Fun-Fly on November 7–8 at the club’s field near Lumberton, North Carolina. The weather was perfect, with cool temperatures and light winds prevailing all weekend. More than 30 fliers of all ages from many different clubs registered to fly. There was only one casualty all weekend: a huge Mud Duck lost a wing on a vertical climb and crashed midfield.

Rides in a real Bell helicopter were available while the flightline was shut down during the drawing for door prizes. Following an afternoon of flying, the traditional steak dinner was served to participants and spectators. Mark your calendars and plan to visit with us next year!

Triad AeroModelers Annual Swap Meet

The Triad AeroModelers, Inc. held its Annual Swap Meet at the Davidson County Fairgrounds in Lexington, North Carolina, this past March. This gathering is normally the last one in the season before flying begins. As you can see from the pictures in the next column, there was a good-sized crowd. The club served good food as usual, which helped some of the early vendors by allowing them to eat at the meet. Put this event on your list for next year, same time, same place!
