THE WINSTON SALEM Radio Control
(WSRC) club held its fourth annual Giant
Scale Fly-In at the club field in Mocksville,
North Carolina this past April. The
International Miniature Aircraft Association
(IMAA) event was CDed by Phil Vance.
Jack Sears has this Tri-Pacer as well as a fullscale
one.
Approximately 30 pilots from North
Carolina and surrounding states came. As
usual, food was available for pilots and
spectators. The weather was great and all
who attended had a good time.
A Skyraider by Trent Wilhelm.
This Corsair is owned by Jerrel Bolick.
David Hames’ Chipmonk.
Gilbert Coffen’s military Cub.
A Pitts by Robert Vess.
Michael Vaughn’s P-47.
Jerrel Bolick’s Nieuport.
The Carolina 1/2A Crew Reedie Race and
Fly-in was a great success. The original
focus on this event was to fly 1/2A models
for sport as well as have a two-class pylon
race. What was a second thought was
inviting all the kids to fly 1/2A CL models.
Although we had a great race despite a
little trouble with the wind, the kids with
their 1/2A CL airplanes were the most
enjoyable of the meet! I brought out several
1/2A models to fly and never cranked one
engine because I was assisting the kids
along with several others. It was
commented, and I would have to agree, this
was the largest assembly of 1/2A models and
young fliers I have seen in many years!
There was a rush of long-forgotten
memories of the premium quality time I
spent as a kid with my dad and others,
building and flying 1/2A CL models. Many
stories popped up of those days gone by and
put smiles on some aged faces!
Vic Welland and his son, Spencer, and Gene
Poremba and his grandson, Ethan.
A group shot of Spencer, Ethan, Andrew and
Ashley with their CL awards! Well deserved
for these up-and-coming pilots!
The Reedie Race results had Mike
Langlois in first, John Gibson, second, and a
tie for third between Jim Katz and Vic
Welland that was settled by a gentlemanly
coin toss in Jim Katz’s favor. In Open Class
Mike Rutcka won first, Vic Welland got
second, and Mike Langlois places third.
Take a kid flying.
