Gretna Radio Flyers — D.C. Bodenheimer Memorial Fun-Fly (May 22, 2010)

The Gretna Radio Flyers hosted the second annual D.C. Bodenheimer Memorial Fun-Fly on May 22, 2010. Fun was in the name of the event, and it was had by all.

This fun-fly was sponsored by Laser Cutter Workshop and KC Hobby. We hope that this event continues to grow and that participation increases as well.

Newport News Park RC Club — Seventh Annual Scale Fly-In (August 14, 2010)

The Newport News Park RC Club held its seventh annual Scale Fly-In on August 14, 2010, at the club field. Conditions could not have been better: clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and a light breeze right down the runway from right to left.

There were 21 registered pilots from several area clubs, with one guest flier from Maryland. Contest Director Joe Lupton called the pilots' briefing at 9:00 a.m., and flying began at approximately 9:15.

Seven military models and 16 civilian models flew. A model had to have flown to be eligible for an award. All awards were based on voting by the pilots and spectators except for one: the Turkey Flight Award, given to the worst crash of the day.

The unfortunate recipient of that award was Steve Kolet. His very nice biplane suffered an in-flight structural failure; the wings fluttered to earth after the fuselage augered in on the far side of the runway.

The hit of the day was Marvin Napier from Maryland with a half-scale Decathlon. This beautiful red-and-yellow model looked realistic in flight, and Marvin knows how to fly it. With smoke billowing, he flew every maneuver one would expect of the full-scale aircraft. Marvin took home the Best of Show award as well as the Most Realistic Flight award. Congratulations, Marvin.

Lunch was ready by noon, followed by the runway lineup. Ballots were passed out to all present and the votes were counted.

As CD, I would like to thank everyone who helped with this meet. I would especially like to thank my wife, Levona, who came out and helped me with registration. This is a club effort and, as usual, we had good participation. Thanks to all and congratulations to the winners. We had a good time and I'm already looking forward to next year.
