Lewes RC Club — Hopkins Field (Lewes, DE)

Dawson Gillaspy, secretary of the Lewes RC Club in Lewes, Delaware, sent the following:

It has been a few years since you’ve heard from our club, so I thought you might be interested in seeing how we have improved our flying field over the past year or two.

In the interest of safety and appearance we have reconfigured our safety fencing and installed barriers at the flightline, complete with transmitter-holding cradles so a pilot does not have to juggle the radio and plane, perhaps with the engine running, while walking to the flight station.

We have also constructed a high fence immediately in front of the spectator seating area to protect visitors who may not want to get a wayward airplane in their lap.

Because our field, called Hopkins Field, is on private farm land we cannot install any permanent structural features of any sort, but we do have a porta-potty and a sheltered seating area for members and spectators.

Skyline Flyers RC Club — Camp Fantastic (Reva, VA)

The Skyline Flyers RC Club of Reva, Virginia, held its 13th annual Camp Fantastic event at the club field in the fall of 2010. The event is for children up to age 16 who have, or have had, cancer.

One child, Alex, has attended three consecutive years and seems to improve each year.

This group of approximately 100 was supervised by counselor Rob Rideout. The event included:

  • flying with the buddy box
  • a candy drop
  • food
  • fun for all

The aerial pictures of the club site were taken from an electric-powered model flown by the club’s president, Perry Jones. They look as though they were taken from a full-scale airplane.

If you are in the area during this year’s event, stop by and see the smiles and expressions on the children’s faces; I bet you will not forget them.
