THE DCRC CLUB held the District IV
International Miniature Aircraft Association
(IMAA) Big Bird event September 9-12,
2010, at the Flying Circus Aerodrome in
Bealeton, Virginia. Andy Kane CDed the
occasion, supported by many members of
the club. As usual, there were many
airplanes and plenty of flying for the
several-day event.
The weather was almost too good to be
true. The site was excellent with permanent
toilet facilities and plenty of food and
drinks. Flying Circus Aerodrome is a fullscale
airport with plenty of flying room for
full-scale aircraft and models, too. On
Sunday, there is an air show with a model
exhibition starting the festivities after lunch.
Hank Masoulf took the pictures and said
there were 82 pilots with 120 planes.
Also attending were Dave Mathewson,
former AMA president, and wife, Ginger;
Bliss Teague, vice president of AMA
District IV and his wife, Shirley; IMAA
President Bill Hamby; Josh Bunn, IMAA
Director District IV; and Frank Fels, IMAA
Director District II.
Watch for the event during the first part
of next September. Come join the fun and
flying.

The 44th Annual Soar for Fun event was
held on November 4-7, 2010. It was
sponsored jointly by the Cumberland
Aircraft Modelers Society (camsrc.org) and
the Capital Area Soaring Association
(soarcasa.org) on a high mountain top
meadow near Cumberland, Maryland.
This site features thermal, slope, and
wave Soaring at its best. Sailplane
enthusiasts from the East Coast and beyond
travel here each November for some of the
best soaring conditions in the country. The
area features a full-scale glider port and is
the same ridge used by full-scale glider
pilots for goal-and-return and record
attempts.
This year, nearly 60 pilots participated in
the fun and camaraderie, flying every type
and size of sailplane including hand launch,
hi-start, winch, aerotow, and electric power.
Alex Breitkreutz’s DA-150-powered 30%
Citabria hauled the scale gliders tirelessly
for the entire event. Charley Reeves’ ¼-
scale electric-powered J3 Cub towed the
smaller aircraft aloft.
The weather was absolutely perfect,
allowing sailplanes to stay aloft for extended
flights, limited only by their flight pack
capacity. The local fire department furnished
everyone with great subs each lunch.
Join us November 5-6, for some of the
best RC Soaring in the country.

scale gliders.
The 10.5-meter Nimbus 4 was the largest
sailplane of the event.

custom craftsmanship are still being built.
