THE RALEIGH-DURHAM Radio Control
Club (RDRC) held its annual Fly for Tots
event in September 2010. The event again
raised more than $27,500 for the Victory
Junction Gang. The Victory Junction Gang
was started by several NASCAR drivers in
2004 to help children with special needs go to
summer camp.
The camp helps these special children get
to do things they might not have the
opportunity to experience without the help of
organizations such as RDRC. This is RDRC’s
special project this year, and to date, the club’s
donations have totaled more than $100,000.
More than 200 registered pilots attended
the event, along with many spectators, and
food and merchandise vendors. There were
helicopter rides and the Guru Extreme show
team with its simulator trailer to acquaint
some of the spectators to our hobby/sport. The
team stayed busy throughout the weekend.
Participants came from the surrounding
states and from as far away as Maryland and
New Jersey. Dave Mathewson, then AMA’s
president, my wife, Shirley, and I, and Josh
Bunn, District IV associate vice president,
represented AMA. The International
Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) was
represented by its president, Bill Hamby, and
Frank Fels, the District II director.
Larry Lewis CDed the event, with plenty
of help from many of the RDRC members.
That’s what makes Fly for Tots such a great
success.
The Charlotte AeroModelers held its 10th
Annual Fall Fun Fly on September 25 of last
year. It was the best ever with 51 registered
pilots and more than 200 spectators.
The club served barbecue and the local 4-H
club sold and served desserts. Plaques were
awarded for best Scale, Biplane, Military,
Sport, and People’s Choice. More than $1,000
worth of prizes came from local merchants’
donations.
Scott Gantt, club vice president, sent the
information and pictures.
