The following report was sent in by
Rick Marquiss:
On Saturday, June 18, 2011, the
Pegasus R/C Club in Hagerstown,
Maryland, held its First Annual
Pegasus Flight for Cancer. The event
benefits the local cancer treatment
center’s Patient Assistance Fund.
The pilots of the club were to raise
money, $1-per-minute, for their flight
time that day. Spectators would also
be able to go up on the buddy box for
the same donation of $1-per-minute.
To enhance the pilot donations,
we solicited items from businesses
for a raffle and got some nice items
including a $100 gift certificate from
a photography studio and a $45 gift
certificate from a steakhouse. We also
offered RC simulators and a moon
bounce and face painting for the kids.
The club members brought their
“A” games! As a visiting pilot from
more than an hour away stated, “You
guys have a little of everything here!”
The spectators saw micro electrics,
EDF jets, big electric twins, glow,
gassers up to 42%, and four turbines.
We had eight planned demonstrations
throughout the day including Combat,
freestyle, and Precision Aerobatics,
EDF’s, and turbines. Of course, the
gassers with their smoke systems and
the jets stole the show! We stayed
until after dark and did a little night
flying!
We had 21 pilots register and 11
trainees went up on the buddy box.
The response from kids and adults
alike was great fun as they flew an
airplane—many for the very first time!
At the end of the day, we had raised
more than $4,400 for the charity,
making a difference in our community
while doing something that we love
to do! Now, we’ll take a few months
off and then start planning the Pegasus
Second Annual Flight for Cancer.
