Pegasus R/C Club — First Annual Pegasus Flight for Cancer (June 18, 2011)
On Saturday, June 18, 2011, the Pegasus R/C Club in Hagerstown, Maryland, held its First Annual Pegasus Flight for Cancer. The event benefits the local cancer treatment center’s Patient Assistance Fund.
Pilots raised money at a rate of $1 per minute of flight time. Spectators could also fly on the buddy box for the same donation of $1 per minute.
To boost donations, the club solicited raffle items from local businesses, including:
- $100 gift certificate from a photography studio
- $45 gift certificate from a steakhouse
We also offered RC simulators, a moon bounce, and face painting for the kids.
The club members brought their “A” games. As a visiting pilot from more than an hour away said, “You guys have a little of everything here!” Spectators saw micro electrics, EDF jets, large electric twin-engine models, glow-powered models, gassers up to 42%, and four turbine-powered models. We had eight planned demonstrations throughout the day, including combat, freestyle, precision aerobatics, EDFs, and turbines.
The gassers with their smoke systems and the jets stole the show. We stayed until after dark and did some night flying.
We had 21 pilots register and 11 trainees go up on the buddy box. The response from kids and adults alike was enthusiastic, with many flying an airplane for the very first time.
At the end of the day we had raised more than $4,400 for the charity, making a difference in our community while doing something we love. We’ll take a few months off and then begin planning the Pegasus Second Annual Flight for Cancer.
