Oak
PA;
On October 6, 2012, the Sandhills Model
Aircraft Club held its Third Annual
Colonel Earl Dugan Memorial Fly-In
at the club’s field in Cameron, North
Carolina. What a tremendous success!
The weather was fantastic and we had
26 registered pilots flying all types of
airplanes, ranging from small electrics to
turbines. Many brought several aircraft.
There were more than 40 models in the
pits. We had pilots from across North
Carolina, and one of our past presidents,
Raoul Trudell, came from Mississippi.
Several local hobby shops sponsored
the event and provided outstanding raffle
prizes. We can’t thank our sponsors
enough. They really helped make the
event a memorable one.
There were two noontime 3-D
demonstrations, one fixed wing and
one helicopter. The fixed-wing 3-D
demonstration was flown by Danny
Allen, who wowed the crowd with his
100cc Yak 54 and some impressive
flying. Kevin McGrady, from Charleston,
South Carolina, put on a jaw-dropping
3-D helicopter demonstration. The event
grows each year, and we had so much
fun that we’re already planning for 2013!
Raoul Trudell readies his 55cc Spacewalker for
a flight.
Danny hovers his Yak 54 for the crowd during the
noon demonstration.
After roughly three years of planning,
Mid Atlantic World War I Dawn
Patrol 2012 at last filled the skies over
southeast Virginia. The inaugural event,
hosted by the Tidewater Radio Control
club (TRC) of Chesapeake, Virginia,
was held October 4-7.
The airport’s runways were open
to World War I RC flying beside the
Military Aviation Museum in Virginia
Beach, Virginia. The museum provided
indoor overnight storage between and
under its WWI and WWII aircraft.
Some of the museum’s aircraft were
moved out of the hangar and parked
near the RC area—a perfect backdrop
for the event. A full-scale P-51 also did
flybys in front of the flightline Saturday
afternoon. This was an amazing venue!
There was a great pilot turnout
(43) with their high-quality models.
Many came from as far away as Texas,
Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio,
and New York.
A pilots’ briefing was held each
morning, followed by the singing of the
Star Spangled Banner.
Although there was on-site camping,
most pilots stayed at area hotels. The
Virginia Beach ocean resort area is only
25 minutes away.
Wind was an issue early in the week
but the weather was great by Saturday.
Two crossing runways and a large, open
grass field in front of the flightlines made
it possible to take off in any direction
as the wind changed. Sunday’s rainy
forecast prompted some of the pilots to
pack up Saturday night.
TRC members awarded trophies for
Best in Show, Best Axis, and Best Allied
aircraft. The awards were provided
by Glenn Torrance Models. Other
supporters included Balsa USA, RTL
Fasteners, and Debbies RC World.
AMA’s District IV was also represented
at its welcome tent by AMA District IV
Vice President Bliss Teague.
TRC volunteers kept the event
running smoothly and provided food and
drinks. The award ceremony and prize
drawings were held Saturday evening,
followed by a fried chicken dinner
included in the pilots’ landing fee. The
evening concluded with a gathering of
pilots around a fire pit.
All of the pilots had a great time
flying, checking out the museum, and
visiting with old and new friends. TRC
looks forward to doing this again, bigger
and better, in early October 2013.
Check out www.flytrc.com for the latest
information and early signup.
AMA and vendor signs greet the pilots and
visitors.
A great lineup of WWI Scale aircraft.
TRC’s meeting shelter was used for Saturday’s
dinner.
