Fauquier Aero Recreation Modelers (FARM) — Fall Float-Fly

The FARM club hosted its annual Fall Float-Fly on October 5, 2013, at Lake Ritchie in Fauquier County, Virginia. Fifty-seven pilots from Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and North Carolina participated in the all-day event.

More than 36 family members, friends, and drop-ins came to watch the day’s operations. A barbecue lunch was provided in the shaded pavilion for all pilots and observers.

Hampton Roads Radio Control Club (HRRC) — Seventh Annual Toy for Tots Fun-Fly

The Hampton Roads Radio Control club (HRRC) of Suffolk, Virginia, held its Seventh Annual Toy for Tots Fun-Fly at the club field on Saturday, November 2, 2013. There were 67 registered pilots and approximately 175 RC airplanes and helicopters present.

Trophies:

  • Best ARF: Chris Weeks
  • Best kit/stick-built: David Hayes
  • Best warbird: Bill Parker
  • Best of show: Bill Goda

Mills Saylor, HRRC vice president, was the event coordinator and David Haywood was CD. Our sister club, Newport News Park RC club, worked with us and provided the food, cooking, and serving functions.

Unique events and highlights:

  • A series of low flyovers by a vintage, restored PT-17 Stearman piloted by owner Lou Radwanick. Bob Howell, HRRC president, rode in the front seat of the biplane.
  • At noon, a live show by Skydive Suffolk featured four parachutists who dropped from 5,000 feet to the club’s landing strip. Upon landing, the skydivers presented the club with numerous toys for the program.
  • Approximately 50 children were given the opportunity to fly an RC airplane on the buddy box.
  • Santa Claus made an appearance.

The club raised more than $4,000 and collected five full boxes of new toys for Toys for Tots. Everything was donated to local Toys for Tots Chairman John Woleban.
