The Fredericksburg Aeromasters, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, participated in the dedication of the new Stafford Regional Airport terminal building. Construction of the new terminal building took more than a year to complete and is the newest and most significant addition to this northern Virginia airport. This building replaced a trailer that had been used for many years. The project is part of the airport’s modernization program.
The Fredericksburg Aeromasters were invited to put on a display during the Sunday open house for the new terminal building on January 26, 2014. This provided the public and the Stafford Regional Airport Authority members the opportunity to see another side of aviation. Representing the club were Jim Braithwaite and Daniel Hayworth, with former club member Scott Huff. Airport officials present and supporting the club were Henry Scharpenberg, Lindy Kirkland, and Edward Wallis.
The club put on an impressive display of static models for the public. Club members answered questions and showed the importance of model aviation in the community. The club was well received and has been invited back to the airport for community events held during the rest of the year.
One of the events that will feature aeromodeling will be the annual Wings and Wheels Festival that will include static and flying models. This is one of the many community activities that the Fredericksburg Aeromasters, a 20-year Leader Club, does for the aeromodeling community.
Rusty Kennedy, the national chairman of the Leader Member Development Committee, submitted the following report.
The Hampton Roads Radio Control club (HRRC), of Suffolk, Virginia, held its annual Chili Fly on February 1, 2014. Henry Cahoon is the chief organizer and the breakfast cook.
If you arrived early, you were treated to eggs, sausage, bacon, and pancakes. The free event is open to all who wish to attend. Members from many of the local clubs attended, and at noon, 62 people were having a great time. There were many pots of chili, along with all the fixings. Homemade desserts rounded out the feast.
The day was cold and the flying field was covered with snow. No problem! Club president Mills Staylor added snow skies to his trusty J-3 and it was off into the wild blue yonder. Flying off snow is great fun and we don’t often get to do it.
