THE NEWPORT NEWS Park R.C. club
held its Founder’s Day event September 15,
2002, postponed from May because of
weather. The Newport News Parks and
Recreation Commission provide this facility
to the club.
As you can see in the picture, club vice
president, Joe Lupton, and Bill Hamby,
International Model Aircraft Association
District IV Assistant Director, they are
discussing the model that will be on display
at the Tournament of Champions (TOC) in
Nevada.
Club president, Jay Jennings, supervised
the festivities. The public was invited and
treated to good food and demonstrations
throughout the day. A number of people
were introduced to the hobby via the buddybox
system. Children and adults enjoyed
their first Radio Control flight.
Other demonstrations included aerobatic
flights and some ducted-fan flying by Joe
Lupton. This was a fun day for all and I
appreciated being a part of the city and
club’s celebration.
This club is a family-oriented group with
members from the local area and
representatives from at least three military
services. They also serve the youth by
working with Newport News Schools and
the Drug Abuse Resistance Education
(DARE) program.
With cooperation from the local club and
authorities, much can be accomplished.

in Nevada. The owner is Bill Hamby.
The Prince Georges RC Club in Maryland
held its 11th Annual Open House Fly-In
October 5, 2002. This was also to celebrate
renewing the field lease for several more
years.
The public and city fathers were invited
to attend. Along with the good food, the
attendees were treated to flying
demonstrations during the day. Many new to
Radio Control (RC) flying were given a
chance to try their skill via the buddy-box
system with the instructor.
Club president Rick Moreland instructed
the new pilots and announcer Dell Warren
kept the crowd informed.
The club has an excellent site, as you can
see by some of the pictures. It is large
enough for Pylon Racing, and they hold
several Pylon events each year.
Shed and pit area (also known as Dell
Warren’s office).
Rick Moreland with students.
Chic White checking the flightline.
Mary Payne, secretary and treasurer of the
Brasstown Flyers, sent in the following note
and photo:
“Bob Horne, Murphy NC, is standing at
the Brasstown NC airfield, holding a 40%
larger replica of the Sig Kadet Lt-40 aircraft.
(The Sig Lt-40 is considered the best-flying
aircraft of its type.)
“How big is it? Well, Bob stands 6-foot
3-inches tall! He is a skilled aircraft builder
and a member of the Brasstown Flyers
Radio Control club. This monster airplane
proved to be an excellent flying machine
and was seen flying at the annual funfly/
swap meet in Brasstown Saturday,
September 21, 2002. The public was
welcome.”
I would appreciate pictures and information
from the clubs in District IV for column
publication. If you have not seen anything
about your club, maybe you haven’t sent me
anything.
To the clubs that have submitted pictures
and event information and it has not been
printed, it should be shortly and I thank you.
The election is over and I wish to thank
all those who voted. Remember, I appreciate
your input.
I hope everyone had a safe and merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Until later, take a kid flying ...
As always, take a kid flying.
