KEN HOWARD JR., contest coordinator
for the Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers
(CVA), sent in the following story:
“September 14, 2002, the Colonial
Virginia Aeromodelers club held its 12th
Annual Cub Fly-in at the club’s field off
Route 5, west of Williamsburg Virginia. This
event is put on to benefit our local Virginia
State Police.
“A landing fee of one teddy bear, 10
inches or smaller, is required from each
Radio Control (RC) pilot. These bears are
then donated to the State Police for use at the
scene of an accident where children are
involved. The public can also participate by
bringing a donation of a bear or purchasing a
bear on-site from our club. Only Piper Cubs
or Cub variants (L-4, NE-1, Super Cubs) are
allowed to fly during the event.
“This year we were honored by the
presence of two Virginia State Troopers,
Officer Blydenburg and Officer Smith. We
presented 104 collected teddy bears to these
two gentlemen during a break in flying
around 1 p.m. After the presentation, each
officer got a chance to show his RC skills by
flying Pete Rawlings’ Cub on a buddy box—
an event that neither will soon forget.
“This year’s event saw a total of 34 pilots
and 30 aircraft. We were even visited in the
morning by a full-scale Taylor Craft, flown
by Roger Griffith (CVA member), and by a
full-scale J-3 Cub. We drew a large crowd of
spectators through a radio interview with
WNIS 790, a mention in the Williamsburg
Gazette, and by posting of several signs along
Route 5.
“Shortly after the presentation of the bears
to the troopers, we opened the pits to the
public and invited them to get a close look at
the aircraft and to ask questions of its owner.
Lunch was available along with a raffle of a
Great Planes J-3 Almost Ready-to-Fly
(ARF).
“New to this year’s event was an
invitation to a local group of Cub Scouts to
come out and do some hands-on flying via
the buddy box. This was Pete Rawlings idea.
He contacted the Scouts, organized the
ground crews and buddy box pilots, and
convinced several members to donate their
time and airplanes.
“A ground school, run by Dave Heape,
our lead instructor, and supported by several
other members, took more than 30 Scouts
through the basics of flight and RC. We ran
two training boxes continuously for
approximately 11/2 hours, giving each
participant roughly three minutes of flying
time.
“No aircraft were lost but there was an
amazing save by Mike Foster, our vice
president, during one sortie. Each Cub Scout
was awarded a certificate of achievement for
their efforts. All of this went on during the
event with no disruption to those flying.
“This was truly a club effort that resulted
in a great day of flying as well as putting a
favorable impression of our hobby in the
minds of everyone who attended. This is an
annual event and we hope to see you there
next year. If you would like to see more
pictures of the event, visit our Web site at
