Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers — 12th Annual Cub Fly-in (Ken Howard Jr., CVA Contest Coordinator)

Ken Howard Jr., contest coordinator for the Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers (CVA), submitted the following report.

On September 14, 2002, the Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers club held its 12th Annual Cub Fly-in at the club field off Route 5, west of Williamsburg, Virginia. The event benefits the local Virginia State Police.

A landing fee of one teddy bear (10 inches or smaller) was required from each radio-control (RC) pilot. These bears were donated to the State Police for use at accident scenes involving children. The public could also participate by bringing a bear donation or purchasing a bear on-site from the club. Only Piper Cubs or Cub variants (L-4, NE-1, Super Cubs) were allowed to fly during the event.

This year the club was honored by the presence of two Virginia State Troopers, Officer Blydenburg and Officer Smith. During a break in flying around 1 p.m., the club presented 104 collected teddy bears to the troopers. After the presentation, each officer flew Pete Rawlings' Cub on a buddy box, an experience they will not soon forget.

The event included 34 pilots and 30 aircraft. In the morning, attendees were visited by a full-scale Taylorcraft flown by Roger Griffith (CVA member) and by a full-scale J-3 Cub. The club attracted a large crowd of spectators thanks to a radio interview with WNIS 790, a mention in the Williamsburg Gazette, and several signs along Route 5.

After the bear presentation, the pits were opened to the public, who were invited to get a close look at the aircraft and ask questions of the owners. Lunch was available, and the club held a raffle for a Great Planes J-3 Almost Ready-to-Fly (ARF).

New to this year's event was an invitation to a local group of Cub Scouts to participate in hands-on flying via the buddy box. Pete Rawlings organized the Scouts' participation, arranged ground crews and buddy box pilots, and enlisted several members to donate their time and airplanes.

A ground school, run by Dave Heape (the club's lead instructor) and supported by several members, took more than 30 Scouts through the basics of flight and RC. The club ran two training boxes continuously for approximately 1.5 hours, giving each participant roughly three minutes of flying time. No aircraft were lost; there was, however, an impressive save by Mike Foster, the club vice president, during one sortie. Each Cub Scout received a certificate of achievement.

The event ran smoothly with no disruption to flying activities. It was a true club effort that produced a great day of flying and left a favorable impression of the hobby on attendees. The Cub Fly-in is an annual event, and the club hopes to see visitors next year.
