District IV Report

Ray Gordon Memorial Jumbo Fly-in (June 21–23, 2002)

The Valley R.C. Flying Club held its annual Ray Gordon Memorial Jumbo Fly-in June 21–23, 2002 at the club's field in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Pilots from many clubs across the state attended the event.

Many spectators attended the successful fly-in. Throughout the event, aviation-related questions were announced over the public address system; anyone under the age of 18 who could correctly answer a question was given a prize. The younger attendees seemed to enjoy that activity.

Tyke Hale and Team Lanier were among the many regulars in attendance, putting on their usual fine aerial display.

During the noon break, all aircraft were displayed on the runway to allow spectators a chance to take close-up pictures and ask questions of the pilots. An information booth was staffed throughout the event to provide information about the club, the AMA, and model aviation in general.

DC/RC Oktoberfest (October 6, 2002)

The DC/RC club in Maryland held the Oktoberfest 2002 on October 6. All attendees were treated to a scrumptious meal prepared by head chef Andy Kane and his crew. If you went away hungry, it was your own fault—Andy is as good a cook as he is a flier.

After the meal, the following treated everyone to a flying exhibition:

  • Andy Finizio
  • Doug Harper
  • Andy Kane
  • Walt Gallaugher
  • and others

Club members discussed how to keep flying fields, educate the public, and control noise. DC/RC is working with 4-H members and Boy Scouts, teaching them to fly—good community relations. I want to thank the club, and especially Walt Gallaugher, for inviting me to participate. This club works hard and has good relations with the city and county authorities, as you can see by the pictures of the site and surrounding areas. They have a separate area opposite the parking for helicopters.

Festival of Flight (Fayetteville, NC — May 16–25, 2003)

I want to remind everyone about the Festival of Flight in Fayetteville, North Carolina, May 16–25, 2003. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Howard Hooper:

Howard needs flight instructors, spotters, and other volunteers to help with flight instruction.

There will be many flying demonstrations with both models and full-size aircraft. Weather permitting, the Wright Flyer replica will be flown each day. For further information, check the website: www.festivalofflight.org.

Until next time, go teach a kid to fly.
