Frederick (Maryland) Model Aircraft Club (FMAC) — Annual Fun-Fly

The FMAC held its annual fun-fly on September 22, 2002. The event was originally scheduled for September 15 but was canceled due to rain and rescheduled to September 22.

  • By 10 a.m. roughly 30 members and guests had arrived. With shelter and plenty of food available, the club fired up the barbecue.
  • Brief showers came and went during the day, allowing all pilots to demonstrate their flying skills.
  • By noon approximately 60 people were in attendance.
  • Kids' events (a candy drop, glider-through-a-hoop, and glider distance) went as planned.
  • Under threatening skies the activities proceeded; the rains held off and all 11 events ran smoothly. A gift certificate was awarded to the winner of each event.
  • Demonstrations included helicopter, International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC), and pattern flying.
  • Food: free hot dogs, hamburgers, covered dishes, and sodas.
  • Attendance: roughly 70 members and guests.
  • Door prizes: airplanes and RC accessories donated by Larch Lane Hobbies, HobbyTown USA, Barn Speed Hobbies, and Doug's Hobby Shop.

Westminster Aeromodelers — Winter Chili Fly

Report from Dale R. Johnston (newly appointed AMA representative for the club).

  • The Chili Fly is an annual Westminster Aeromodelers tradition that gets members out of the hangar and thinking about spring flying.
  • The eighth Chili Fly took place on February 9, 2003. Wendell Richards, a past president and the event's original instigator, makes the chili every year.

Photos (left to right): field marshal Lloyd "Dutch" Bridges; Paul Schaffner; Dale Johnston; treasurer Bob Allen; Tom Hier; newsletter editor Jim Hodges; and field marshal Wendell Richards.

Airplanes pictured: Dale's Senior Telemaster; John Sterret's Fundango; Tom's Raptor; Bob's Raptor; and Wendell's Cloud Dancer.

The group at the chuck wagon includes Wendell Richards, Augie Gray, Andrew Gray, Jim Hodges, John Sterret, and Paul Schaffner. The event is a family affair — Tom Hier's wife Eleanor and their junior birdgirl candidate, Maggy, were present.

Thanks to Dale for the information. The District IV reporter is always looking for activity reports from throughout the district. Go out and teach a kid to fly, then write in with your report!
