The Frederick (Maryland) Model Aircraft
Club (FMAC) held its annual fun-fly
September 22, 2002. Originally scheduled for
September 15, the events were canceled
because of rain.
By 10 a.m. roughly 30 members and
guests had arrived, and since there was shelter
and plenty of food, they decided to fire up the
barbecue and make the most of it.
There was much socializing.
As it turned out, brief showers came and
went during the day, and all pilots got a
chance to demonstrate their flying skills. By
noon, approximately 60 people were in
attendance. The kids’ events, a candy drop,
glider-through-a-hoop, and glider distance,
went as planned.
There were several youngsters waiting for
the candy to drop.

contest.
Rain date,
September 22:
Under threatening
skies, the activities
got under way.
Fortunately, the
rains didn’t come
and the events, 11
in all, ran
smoothly. A gift
certificate was
awarded to the
winner of each
event.
Helicopter,
International
Miniature
Aerobatic Club
(IMAC), and
Pattern

were held. Free
hot dogs,
hamburgers,

and sodas were the
fare for the day.
Roughly 70
members and
guests attended.

From Dale R. Johnston, Westminster
Aeromodelers in Virginia, comes the
following report about an annual tradition.
The club recently appointed Dale to be the
AMA representative.
“In response to your request for input to
the District IV report, I am submitting
several photos that I took at our winter Chili
Fly. The Chile Fly is a tradition with the
Westminster Aero Modelers; it gets us out
of the hangar and thinking about the spring
flying yet to come.
“This was the eighth Chili Fly, and it took
place on February 9, 2003. Wendell Richards,
one of our past presidents, was the original
instigator of the Chile Fly and makes the chili
himself every year.”
Above are (L to R) field marshal Lloyd
“Dutch” Bridges, Paul Schaffner, Dale
Johnston, treasurer Bob Allen, Tom Hier,
newsletter editor Jim Hodges, and field
marshal Wendell Richards. The airplanes
are Dale’s Senior Telemaster, John
Sterret’s Fundango, Tom’s Raptor, Bob’s
Raptor, and Wendell’s Cloud Dancer.
The group at the chuck wagon includes
Wendell Richards, Augie Gray, Andrew
Gray, Jim Hodges, John Sterret, and Paul
Schaffner.
This is a family affair with Tom Hier’s wife
Eleanor and their junior birdgirl candidate,
Maggy.
Thanks, Dale, for the information! I’m
always looking for reports of activities
throughout the district. Go out and teach a kid
to fly then write to me about it!
