THE FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT 2003 in
Fayetteville, North Carolina, is now
history but what an event it was!
The festival lasted 10 days during the
latter part of May and included full-scale
air shows at Pope Air Force Base, exhibits
in several buildings and outside at the
coliseum area, and, of course, a flight
school to introduce newcomers-young and
old alike-to Radio Control (RC) modeling.
Howard Hooper arranged the flight
school with the help of Horizon Hobby,
which donated the airplanes, radios, and
other equipment for flying. Local club
members from the Cumberland RC Club,
the Piedmont Aeromodelers, the
Fayetteville Aero Modeling Society, the
Central Carolina RC Modelers, and the
Raleigh Durham Radio Control
volunteered as instructors. These people
introduced several thousand newcomers to
the sport/hobby of RC flying via the
buddy-box system.
Although there were several rainstorms,
it never dampened their spirits. After the
event, the equipment was donated to the
clubs that participated for their flying
instruction programs. Several police
officers who provided security even took
their turn at flying and later bought
equipment and joined the local clubs.
Other exhibits included military
equipment, sky diving, Wright brothers’
displays, space equipment, and replicas.
Aviation-wise, nearly anything you could
think of was there. There was even a
replica of the first Wright Flyer, complete
with rail and catapult tower.
A replica of the Vin Fiz making a short
hop in the parking lot represented the first
cross-country flight. To the best of my
knowledge, Festival of Flight 2003 was the
largest celebration of flight on the East
Coast.
Thanks to Howard Hooper and all of
the people who participated in making the
whole event a grand success. Special
thanks to George Fryer for taking care of
things when Howard was away.
Students and instructors at the flightline
at the Festival of Flight 2003.
George Fryer readied the airplanes for
the buddy-box introductory lessons.
There were skydiving exhibitions at the
festival.
Several of the police officers who
provided security became new modelers!
There were plenty of things to entertain
youngsters as they waited their turn on
the buddy box.
The Vin Fiz replica was in the parking
lot.
Replica of the 1900 Wright glider.
Replica of the 1901 Wright glider.
Replica of the 1902 Wright glider.
A replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer.
