District IV Report - 2004/03

The following was submitted by Tom McClain, contest director (CD) and an associate vice president (AVP) in District IV.

Northern Virginia Control Line Association — 7th Annual Walt Musciano Scientific Commemorative 1/2A Contest

The Northern Virginia Control Line Association sponsored the seventh annual Walt Musciano Scientific Commemorative 1/2A contest at Bull Run Park. The weather was beautiful, the site was perfect, and the contest was enjoyable. This was Tom McClain’s second year as contest director.

Thanks to the following people who helped make the event a success:

  • Dick Houser — ran the Team Race and judging; ran the 50-50 drawing and Musciano book auction; brought tables for concessions and administration; documented the contest with his digital camera.
  • Scott Richlen — arranged use of Bull Run Park with the Northern Virginia Regional Parks Authority; judged; prepared the grounds on Friday.
  • Bill Smith — brought a lawn mower and cut a lot of grass; brought plenty of change for the concession stand and water.
  • Kirk Wicker — brought his lawn tractor and created two new flying circles; provided his motor home for general use and exclusive use of the bathroom for the ladies.
  • Carl Foster — collected entry fees and assisted with event sign-ups.
  • Ron King — ran the scoring program and ensured fairness and correctness.
  • Dave Reyes — served as pit boss; brought coolers and ice.
  • Hal Howard — brought the Musciano fuel and two Lawn-Boy mowers and cut grass.
  • John Donley — helped cut grass.
  • Chris Jackson — brought six large rubber mats for take-off strips.
  • John Lindberg — helped run the event whiteboards, posted scores, and signed people up for events.
  • Henry Werner — brought a small version of his hobby shop to supply parts; stocks snacks, drinks, and other items at Virginia HobbySport for purchase at club meetings.
  • Jim Pollock — judged Stunt and assisted with the concession stand.
  • Janet Pollock — provided pastries from Panera Bread.
  • Sheryl McClain — set up the concession stand, provided refreshments and snacks, and contributed to club funds.

If anyone was missed, apologies and thanks to them as well. Let’s do it again next year.

Walt Musciano came down from Lodi, New Jersey, via Amtrak and officiated the contest.

West Hickory Aero Modelers — 5th Annual Bob Wilson Memorial Fly-In

The West Hickory Aero Modelers in Hickory, North Carolina, held their fifth annual Bob Wilson Memorial Fly-In with approximately 25 fliers participating. Models ranged from Old-Timers to World War I and II aircraft and sport models. The weather cooperated for a wonderful day. There was a 50-50 drawing and a raffle to raise club funds. Food was served by the Drowning Creek Fire Department, which received all proceeds from sales. Steve Parson served as contest director. Photos courtesy of Steve Elledge.

Catawba Valley RCers — Donation to Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry

The Catawba Valley RCers of Claremont, North Carolina, donated $1,000 to the Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry. Mark McClellan is shown donating the check—proceeds from a club fly-in—to Reverend Burton. The funds will be used to help families in need. Thanks to the club for this worthwhile community project.
