Raleigh-Durham Radio Control (RDRC) Fun-Fly — April 17 (report by Jim Underwood)

Jim Underwood sent the following report and photos from the Raleigh-Durham Radio Control (RDRC) club’s fun-fly held on April 17.

“We had 60 registered pilots, and nearly perfect weather with a slight breeze down the runway that gave no one an excuse not to fly. There were all types of airplanes present from 40% aerobats to Giant Scale warbirds and many fun-fly aircraft scattered all over. The CD of the event was James Fowler.

“Food and drinks were available for members and guests, and prizes were given out throughout the event. This is one of two AMA-sanctioned fun-fly events that RDRC has each year, and we are planning to have an additional International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) fun-fly next year as well.

“Our club has roughly 90 members. The field is in the middle of approximately 55 acres of overfly area with a paved runway, as well as a parallel grass runway. We are very proud of our club and strive to attract new members all the time. We have electricity at the field for charging equipment.

“Our club looks forward to our upcoming events and welcomes all visitors who want to come out and participate.”

Frederick Model Aircraft Club — Webelos Bridging Day (April 24, 2004) (report by Dave Hostetter)

This report was furnished by Dave Hostetter, public relations coordinator for the Frederick Model Aircraft Club.

“Scouts from the surrounding communities converged on the East Alco Recreation Site on April 24, 2004, in Frederick, Maryland, for their annual Webelos Bridging Day (WE'LL BE LOYAL Scouts). This is a day when the Boy Scouts troops help indoctrinate the Webelos in preparation for the transition into Boy Scouts.

“The day consisted of fire building, the use of an axe and knife, map and compass use, using a zip line, camping, and cooking. As an additional event, the Frederick Model Aircraft Club gave presentations explaining the history and physics of flight. The Scouts had the chance to fly some of our members’ trainers on a buddy-box system with some of our instructors. The hope is that this experience will go toward their aviation merit badge requirements.

“The high winds delayed the start of the training flights until after lunch, but all of the Scouts were very enthusiastic about flying the airplanes. Some even got back into the line to fly again.

“Frederick Model Aircraft Club is searching for a suitable flying site in the Frederick County area due to the recent loss of its field of many years because of industrial development.”

Go take a kid flying.
