SEWARD E. OWEN JR. of the New Bern
Aeromodelers, sent in this information about
what his club is doing for some of the youth
in his town.
“There is a summer club for young people
in downtown New Bern, North Carolina,
called the Area Reporting Center. Al
Worsfold is our AMA club president.
“The club voted to help the Area
Reporting Center two hours a day each
Thursday during the summer. The young men
all built Delta Darts during one session and
then went out and flew! In addition to Delta
Darts they have built other balsa and plastic
models during these sessions. We concentrate
on the building end and fly them if they will
fly.
“We find it hard to believe the energy and
concentration these young people bring to
building models. During the middle of the
sessions when they get really into it, you can
hear a pin drop!
This is proof that modeling is still a viable
activity for the young. Try it! Bridge some
barriers and put a smile on the face of a
young person who does not normally have a
lot to smile about. I guarantee that you will
not regret it!”
This photo shows the 13 young men and
five of the senior club members who
instructed. Tom O’Connor, club treasurer
and chief instructor for the sessions is in
the extreme left back in the photo. Eric, the
local instructor, is in the back with the
white cap.
Frank Rega and Earl Reitleback sent in the
following article about the Tidewater Radio
Club’s Mid Atlantic Jet Fly 2004. The photos
were taken by club member Frank Blanchard.
“The Jet Fly was held at the US Navy
Auxiliary Field in Fentress, Virginia. This is
one of the fields the Navy uses to practice
carrier landings, so we had wide open spaces
for the event. The Navy has been supportive
in allowing us the use of that portion of its
facilities.
A small part of the spectator line looked
like judges’ row from the impound area.
Today and possibly a sign of the future,
some of our spectators.
“What a great weekend and turnout. There
were 43 registered pilots and roughly 90
aircraft. We didn’t count the spectators who
were coming and going all day both days but
we estimate that there were 600 visitors.
“Top Gun, a Jet Pilot Organization
award, went to Tony Massiello from
Centerville, Maryland, with his F-4 and
KingCat.
Pilot’s Choice
was awarded to
Daytona Beach,
Florida’s Todd
Witkoff for his
Eurofighter 3-D
aircraft. The
Military Scale
award went to
Dave
Malchione Jr.
for his BVM F-
100. Dave is
from Kennett,
Pennsylvania.
Best Finish was
won by Jaime
Snipes from
Durham, North
Carolina, with his
BVM KingCat.
“The Best
Sport Aircraft
award went to
Glen Robinson of
East Meadow,
New York, for
his BVM Black
Adversary
Bandit. The
Best Electric prize was won by Richard
(Lucky) Boyington from Virginia Beach,
Virginia, with a V 1000 Turbo Glider.
“We celebrated the 40th wedding
anniversary of Rose and Leo DeRosa and
wish them the best of luck.
“The only incident of the weekend
occurred on Sunday when Mike Lescher
crashed his beautiful BVM F-4 Phantom on a
landing approach because of the
unpredictable wind. Mike flew all day
Saturday without any problems and we all felt
sorry for him.
“Frank Rega Sr., CD, planner, and
organizer thanks all who attended. They were
exceptional sportsmen, friendly to all, and
helpful in educating those who came to watch.
This is what makes our hobby so great.”
