District IV Report - 2004/12

THE MINI-DOME in Johnson City,
Tennessee, was the site again for the Indoor
Nats. I attended two days with my good
friend, Cliff Cullpepper. Cliff was a world
of information, which made the event more
interesting to a first-timer.
I was amazed at the time, effort, and
skills the modelers put into these airplanes.
There were
several records
set this time that
may be hard to
beat.
With some of
the lighter
models, the
owners had to
walk very
slowly for fear
of breaking
them. The
propellers on
these airplanes
turned so slowly
you could count
the turns. These
are some very
dedicated
modelers.
New Contest Board member, John
Diebold, winding his model.
Abram Van Dover was the CD and kept
things in order, assisted by Nats Manager,
Ron Morgan and his wife, Jane.
The Mini-Dome is a great facility for this
event, and I understand the contestants made
a sizeable contribution toward its rent.
Ron Morgan, the Nats manager, at work.
Abram Van Dover, CD, at work.
Don Slusarczyk with his Peanut D.H.6.
Mass World War I launch. Take a look at
the facility.
Jerry Comb’s F1D.
The Smith Lake Flyers (SLF), a new club
near Concord, North Carolina, had its new
field dedication recently. As you can see by
the pictures, the members had a great time
and have a very nice field near a lake where
they can fly land and water aircraft. SLF
member Dolan Parker furnished pictures and
information.
Fred Brooks (R) was the SLF event
organizer.
Knox Lovingood, the SLF vice president,
in front of Smith Lake.
(L to R) Duncan Parker, Bernie Smith, and
Al Ostrande.
Wesley Roach, Al Ostrander, and Dolan
Parker are doing the cooking.
Until next time, go take a kid flying.
