THE BEALETON(Virginia) Fly-In 2004 is
over and what an event it was. There were
three days of nearly perfect weather although
it was a little hot. The first two days were
filled with flying and some were taking
advantage of rides that were available in fullscale
airplanes.
Many enjoyed the catered dinner under
the “big top” Saturday night. After dinner,
there was a presentation by Andy Kane with
pictures of happenings during the event and
some of past events.
There was a raffle held and many went
home with very valuable prizes. Two of the
prizes were rides in the full-scale aircraft on
Sunday morning. I won one of the rides, but
donated it to one of the younger ones by a
second drawing.
On Sunday morning, the Air Show Team
treated the attendees to a flying model
demonstration. I believe Snoopy’s doghouse
was even flown!
After the model show, the full-scale air
show began. It included wing-walking and
hanging by the legs from the lower wing.
The Fly-In was expertly handled by CD
Jim McDaniel and co-CD Andy Kane.
The Fly By Knights, District of Columbia
RC Club, and the Flying Circus Aerodrome
of Bealeton presented the Fly-In 2004. Make
your plans for three days of flying and fun in
Bealeton in August 2005.
This is a photo of part of the flightline on
Saturday morning.
This Stearman (L) and the WACO (R) gave
rides and participated in the full-scale
show.
This WACO bi-wing was designed and built
by Terry Lamb.
This North American B-25 is by Rod
Jaeger.
This Sopwith Pup was originally built by
Howard Crispin.
The Skyraider (L) rests in the pit area. The
only one present, this turbin (R) flew well.
This Cessna Bobcat brings to mind Sky
King.
This Sukhoi is by Andy Kane.
Rick Oasen of the Fredericksburg
Aeromasters sent in the following:
“Ashley Smith made the Aeromaster’s
history book on November 11, 2004, when
she was awarded her Certificate of First
Level Flying Proficiency. At nine years old,
she is the youngest to qualify as well as our
first female RC solo pilot.
“Ashley’s dad, flight instructor Doug
Smith, has been teaching her through a
buddy-box system for about seven months.
He said the hardest part she faced was getting
over the fear of crashing. When Ashley taxied
onto the runway to fly her solo flights
everyone at the field crowded the fence to
watch and encourage her efforts. The most
nervous person pacing the pit area was of
course, her dad.
“Ashley is now learning the aerobatic
maneuvers necessary for level two.”
It would certainly increase our
membership and involve the younger
generation if we could have more clubs doing
the same as the Aeromasters. What a
wonderful way to make AMA grow.
If other clubs have something they would
like in the District IV column, please let me
know. Meanwhile, take a kid flying!
