District IV Report - 2009/09

Author: Bliss Teague

Edition: Model Aviation - 2009/09
Page Numbers: 166

166 MODEL AVIATION
THE JOE NALL 2009 was another recordbreaking
event. There were more than 800
registered pilots flying at four different sites.
There was the regular flightline as always,
then the 3-D area, the lake flying, and a
helicopter area. This keeps the various
interests separated and flying more
frequently.
As in previous years, there was the fullscale
noon show and model exhibitions
later. One sad note was that Kirby
McKinney was not able to be onsite because
of medical problems. He was certainly
missed because he is one of the mainstays of
this event.
This year, because of Pat Hartness’
generosity, we were again able to have one
of the best-attended AMA membership
meetings. Thanks, Pat!
Dave Mathewson, AMA president,
presided over the meeting. Other AMA
officers present included Mark Smith,
executive vice president, and vice presidents
(VPs) from Districts I, II, III, IV, V, VII,
VIII, and IX. Rich Hanson, AMA’s liaison
for government and regulatory affairs, gave
a report on sUAVs and our situation with the
FAA. Doug Holland, our finance officer,
was present as were associate vice
presidents (AVPs) from Districts X, Jerry
Neuberger and District IV’s John Kirchstein
and Randy Elliott. Brad Booth, District IV
Frequency and Safety Coordinator, and
Andy Kane, District IV Contest
Coordinator, also attended the meeting.
A large crowd attended the AMA
Membership meeting. Members of the AMA
Executive Council were present to answer
questions and update members on what the
organization was doing.
As Museum Steering Committee
chairperson, I gave an update on the soonto-
be-constructed Claude McCullough
Educational Facility, an addition to the
National Model Aviation Museum made
possible by a donation from the Claude
McCullough estate.
We have a new tent (above) to house the
AMA products brought to the event for
modelers to purchase. Those from AMA
Headquarters working the store were Joyce
Hager, assistant executive director, and
Shelia Tweedy. Norm Rosenstock and
Jackie Shalberg staffed the History Program
booth, and Jim Cherry, AMA’s executive
director kept things in order.
I was proud to present to John Kirchstein
the District Service Award recognizing his
many years as District IV AVP. John
certainly deserves it.
District Service Awards were presented
to Jerrel Bolick and James Burns for their
many years of helping with the membership
meeting and setting up and ditching the tent
for the AMA store and promoting the
hobby/sport of model aviation. My thanks to
all for a job well done.
John Kirchstein (above) was presented with
the District Service Award as were Jerrel
Bolick and James Burns (below) for their
many years of service to the district.
A surprise for my wife Shirley and me
was a cake celebrating our 50th wedding
anniversary on May 16 by our AMA family.
We are not sure who planned all this, but we
surely appreciated it. The cake was good and
many of us enjoyed it. Than you all! This is
just the way modelers are: unique!
