174 MODEL AVIATION
THE MACON Aero Modelers (MAM) club
in Otto, North Carolina, held a picnic and
fun-fly for its members on Saturday, May
23. This event was different from previous
years because members of Franklin Cub
Scout Pack 263 were invited to come out
and join the fun.
Bill Duncan and Lou Vitale attended the
Scout meeting that week and provided
instruction about the principles of flight, a
discussion of the Wright brothers and their
contributions to powered flight, and
answered the Scouts’ questions, using an
electric J-3 Cub, Yak foamy, and helicopter
as demonstrators. This introduction prepared
the boys and helped them earn credits as
Cub Scouts.
On Saturday, eight parents and 15 Scouts
and their siblings joined MAM members and
their families—a combined attendance of
more than 50 people. The Scouts and their
parents watched club members fly a variety
of aircraft in the morning.
After lunch, the Scouts were given the
AMA balsa Barnstormer Monoplane to
assemble. Club members and parents helped
the young Scouts get their aircraft ready to
fly. The Scouts lined up on the centerline of
the grass runway, wound the rubber bandpowered
motors, and let them go. It was a
great scene to see the smiles on the Scouts’
and parents’ faces. The Scout who had the
best flight was given an MAM T-shirt.
Scoutmaster Charlie Vargas expressed
thanks to all members of the club saying, “A
great big thank-you goes out to the Macon
Aero Modelers for inviting us to the Spring
Fun Fly-In. The Scouts had an awesome
time!”
Sharon Slingerland, 21st Century Grant
Site Coordinator in Moneta, Virginia, sent
the picture below of members of the
Virginia Aeromodelers Club of Bedford
County.
In cooperation with the 21st Century
Learning Centers Grant, they are holding
classes with the Moneta Elementary students
to teach the fundamentals of flying model
airplanes and helicopters.
The club members demonstrate the art of
model flying using their own models and the
students will build their own small models
and be able to practice using computer flight
simulators.
