John Spalding Inducted into the Model Aviation Hall of Fame
District IV's John Spalding, AMA #932, was inducted into the Model Aviation Hall of Fame at a gathering of the first District of Columbia Radio Control Club (DCRC) Air Show Team at Bill Cavanaugh’s house in Ellicott City, Maryland, on March 20, 2010.
John has made a lifetime of contributions to model aviation, including service as a District IV vice president and as an AMA representative to the FAI in various capacities.
DCRC History and Reunion
The DCRC was organized in 1972 and put on air shows for six years. John was the organizer and a show team pilot, as were:
- Bill Cavanaugh
- Mike Winter
- Bill Musser
All of the above were in attendance at the reunion. Former DCRC members Bill Charbonneau and Jim Miller have since passed away.
The show team members have been meeting annually to celebrate and socialize.
Spalding’s Collection
Now retired, Spalding’s home is a museum of model aviation, housing more than 100 models and a library of model publications dating back to the 1940s.
Hall of Fame Presentation
The Hall of Fame plaque was presented by John Hunton, himself a Hall of Fame recipient and the architect of the former AMA Headquarters in Reston, Virginia.
