DISTRICT IV’S John Spalding, AMA
#932, was inducted into the Model Aviation
Hall of Fame at a get-together of the first
District of Columbia Radio Control Club
(DCRC) Air Show Team at Bill
Cavanaugh’s house in Ellicott City,
Maryland, on March 20, 2010.
John has made a lifetime of contributions
to model aviation, including service as a
District IV vice president and an AMA
representative to the FAI in various
capacities.
The DCRC was organized in 1972 and
put on shows for six years. John was the
organizer and a show team pilot, as were
Bill, Mike Winter, and Bill Musser who
were all in attendance. DCRC members Bill
Charbonneau and Jim Miller have since
passed away.
The show team members have been
meeting annually to celebrate and socialize.
Now retired, Spalding’s home is a museum
of model aviation, including more than 100
models and a library of model publications
dating back to the 1940s.
The Hall of Fame plaque was presented
by John Hunton, himself a Hall of Fame
recipient and the architect of the former
AMA Headquarters in Reston, Virginia.

The Skyline Flyers RC club in Culpeper,
Virginia haa developed a program to benefit
Camp Fantastic, a camp for children with
cancer or cancer in remission, ages 7 to 17.
The children who attend are generally from
the DC/Maryland metro area.
Special Love of Winchester, Virginia,
sponsors this week of events for the
attendees. There are different activities each
day of the week and the one day they are
brought from Winchester to a farm located
in Culpeper, Virginia, owned by Marshall
Jenkins, a nice person who has hosted the
activity for 13 years.
There are many activities for the
approximately 130 children for the day
including our club members and instructing,
familiarizing, and teaching RC flight.
The club offers a special thanks to
Keriann Ketterman for her instructions to
the children and helping during the cleanup.
The following pictures of the RC flight day
are from Perry Jones, president of the
Skyline Flyers RC club.
