District IX - 2010/08
Joe Nall
For those of us who live in chilly District IX, the flying season finally kicks off with the "granddaddy" of flying events: the Joe Nall.
This year's event exceeded expectations, featuring every type of giant-scale aircraft imaginable. South Carolina weather was cooperative, and the huge crowds were thoroughly entertained by the daily flying exhibitions. The AMA pavilion and the AMA merchandise tent were lively gathering places for members and visitors.
Both the AMA pavilion and merchandise tent are located under a huge oak tree that provides plenty of shade from the South Carolina sun.
The food was mouthwatering, and there was a good turnout for the AMA membership meeting at the end of the day.
If you have not had the opportunity to attend this event, go out of your way to get it on your 2011 calendar. You will not be disappointed!
Donations
I want to send out a special thanks to Michael Verzuh for his generous contribution to the AMA. Michael not only donated personally, but he also contacted his employer, Ball Corporation, to have the contribution matched through the company's matching gifts to nonprofits program. If you would like to donate to the AMA, check whether your employer has a matching-funds program.
In Memoriam
- Joe Dolan — A longtime Denver police officer, aircraft designer, and fixture at the flying fields, Joe always had a great time flying with his brother Jim. He will be missed but not forgotten.
- Gayle Jackson — Also from the Denver area, Gayle was a valued member of the Society of Antique Modelers and was devoted to vintage free-flight (FF) designs. He was an avid aviation photographer and a dedicated member of the community.
We will keep both of them in our hearts. — J.W.
