District IX

DISTRICT IX has a new, revitalized website. Jim Shaw, who has shepherded the site for the last several years, has handed the reins over to Norm Berger. Norm moved here from New Jersey—District II’s loss was our gain here in District IX. Check out Norm’s work at www.amadistrict-ix.org/cms.

Please join the Yahoo Group on our site by entering your e-mail address on the home page in the left-hand column. To get some benefit for our District IX members, we need a continuous flow of information to put on the site. Your input and suggestions are important in making this site work for you.

District IX was fortunate this year to have three clubs benefit from AMA’s Site Development grant program. The Omahawks in Omaha, Nebraska; Jefco Aeromod'lers in Denver, Colorado; and Crosswinds R/C Club in Castle Rock, Colorado were awarded a total of more than $6,000. AMA awarded more than $32,000 nationwide. Congratulations!

Steve Culver, our associate vice president (AVP) in Nebraska, wrote about the Omahawks grant:

"I attended the annual Omahawks President’s Memorial Day egg burn yesterday morning. There were approximately 125 members, family, and guests in attendance to enjoy an all-you-can-eat scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon breakfast. In addition to breakfast there was, of course, lots of flying with over 40 planes of all types present.

"It was also a great opportunity to present to the Omahawks’ president, EJ Murphy, their check and certificate for the 2010 Flying Site Development/Improvement Grant. The Omahawks were very grateful to the AMA for consideration and selection of this grant. Lots of fun was had by all."

Darrell Watts reports

"The Heart of America Float Fly was held June 5 and 6 in Paola, Kansas. Saturday was hot and a bit breezy with about 15 mph winds. Several of the braver souls still got in numerous flights.

"There was rarely a period of time when there wasn’t at least one model in the air. Of course a few were getting tipped over on the surface, too. The retrieval boat stayed busy chasing models where the waves splashed through the prop, killing the engine.

"On Sunday the intrepid fliers were rewarded with a perfect day—80° and 6-7 mph breezes. Flying was steady from 9:30 until 4 p.m. About 25 models flew during the weekend, including some that were really unique.

"The organizers have developed an excellent relationship with the City of Paola and the lake management over the years. This is something that is so critical to our hobby. It is a beautiful float-fly site."
