New Year's Fun-Fly

When the new year rolls in, many clubs have a fun-fly to celebrate the occasion. If you live in District IX, you know that the weather can be problematic with the wind and frigid temperatures.

I suggest putting a fun-fly on your club calendar for New Year’s Day 2013. Make it a rule that weather conditions will not be a reason for canceling the event. Find a ringleader to organize it and include some truly fun flying games. Consider these items when planning:

  • Make weather non-disqualifying for cancellation.
  • Appoint a ringleader to coordinate the event.
  • Include a variety of fun flying games.
  • Provide a traveling trophy for the best performer.
  • Offer hot drinks and snacks.

Swap Meet / Rocky Mountain Modeleers

Most of us are familiar with the large Swap Shop held annually in Perry, Georgia. That huge event did not start off that way — it initially was much smaller and grew in size mostly by word-of-mouth.

The Rocky Mountain Modeleers have started a similar event and hope to grow interest and attendance. The event is scheduled for April 7 at the Larimer County Fairgrounds in Loveland, Colorado. For details, contact Garret Hultgren at (970) 412-7303 or email [email protected].

Awards

Another honor went to an Omahawks member. Robert Wheeler nominated Ralph Brown to receive the 2011 Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Carl Goldberg Vital People Award. A noteworthy panel of AMA representatives from eleven AMA districts selected Ralph for the award.

This award is given to members who go above and beyond to support model aviation, their club, and the entire AMA membership. It is presented to only five deserving members annually. Congratulations, Ralph!

Website Notice

If you have noticed irregularities on our District IX website lately, it is because we were “hacked.” Norm Berger, our webmaster, is getting things under control and we are nearly back to normal.
