READ THIS! The Sunset Flyers RC club
had its flying field taken away from it last
month. The City of St. Cloud in Florida owns
the land.
Club member Bill Gacey wrote to Lynn
Gordon, president of the RCACF club in
Apopka, Florida, and asked if he and his son
could fly on the RCACF field until the Sunset
Flyers could relocate. Here is what Lynn
wrote back:
“On behalf of the RCACF, I invite you
and your entire group of Sunset RC Flyers to
join us at Tangerine Field until such time as
your field is again available. We require all
fliers to be AMA members and to follow our
posted club rules.
“Regards, Lynn Gordon, RCACF
president.”
Lynn Gordon, on behalf of all the
chartered clubs and all the fliers in District V,
I commend you for your unselfish gesture. I
have heard of such unselfish invitations being
extended by word of mouth; this is the first
time I have ever seen such an invitation in
writing. Such unselfishness needs to be
rewarded.
The RC Flyers of Venice held a huge annual
appreciation banquet at an exclusive country
club in Englewood, Florida.
Warren Mumma spoke briefly about club
history, Jack Worrell spoke regarding ethics,
and I spoke briefly on the subject of AMA
history. A superb evening.
Four couples at the big banquet included
Warren and Ester Mumma (L); Barbara and
Russ McManamy; Heidi and Bob Ring; and
club president Allen Wilder and wife Jane.
I attended the Rocket City RC Club’s Big
Spring Fly-In in Christmas, Florida. Rod
Gier, Associate Vice President (AVP) was
the CD. The club has a nice field, hosted a
splendid fly-in, and everybody had a good
time.
Uninvited guest Mother Nature showed
up, too. She produced winds of 15 to 20 mph
at first. By noon the winds were 30 mph and
everybody had to pack up and go home.
The Rocket City RC Club hosted and
officiated over the fun-fly and received a
Club of the Month award.
Some of the club members include (L-R)
Bill Conrad; Mike Riggs; Sherman Grasbe
Jr.; Brian Barnett, club president; Randy
Davis; Bart Luscuskie, impound; Russell
Bolton, vice president (VP); and CD Rod
Gier.
Brian Barnett (L), Rod Gier, and Russell
Bolton are holding the Club of the Month
flag. As soon as this picture was taken,
guess where the flag went? Right up that
wind pole on the left under the sock. There
are more photos on the District V Web site
at www.modelair.org.
I attended the grand opening of the Manatee
County RCers new flying field. It was a huge
ceremony. The City of Palmetto, Florida, has
leased the land and the city’s mayor,
Lawrence Bustle, attended the ceremony.
Also in attendance were county
commissioners Amy Stein and Joe McClash.
Palmetto’s commissioners and mayor are
cutting the ribbon to open the field to the
club. Each was presented with an AMA
District Service Award in tribute.
I honored this Manatee County club with
a Club of the Month award. This photo is of
many of the club members who helped run
and participated in the big show. The names
are correct because I mailed this picture to the
club president, Ray Thompson, who named
the people and mailed it back.
Kneeling: Joe Wright; Lindsey Wheeler,
club treasurer; Lauren Wheeler; Skip
North; Don Beaureguard; Vern Kropf; Bill
Killam; Rosemary Musgrove; David Tuttle;
Ray Thompson, club president; Glen
Ridgewell; Dick Williams; CD Jim
Holloman; Don Shearer; Bill Kersey; and
Warren Wagner. Standing: Roger Williams;
Bruce Gross; Elwood Simon; Charles
Johnson; Jerry Dinzer; VP Billy Dilworth;
Rick Davies; Don Kerr; Paul Schmitz; Laura
Long; Steve Bevington; safety officer John
Walton; Julie Walton; Bob Avery; Daryl
Hilles; Maggie Williams; Bob Kline; Bill
Woodruff; Louis MacDonald; Fred
Staudaher; Bill Sterka; Darryl Edwards;
and Bert Luchte.
I attended the annual Nature Coast RCers
Warbird Fly-in at Inglis Locks, Florida. It
was my third time there. The club has a large
700 x 25-foot grass runway. Every flier had a
good time and enjoyed themselves.
They were awarded a Club of the Month
honor, which included a nice 2 x 3-foot flag
and a cloth patch for everyone in the club.
This photo includes AVP Jim Saiff who
gets around plenty; Ed Wirtemburg; club
president Art Lowery; CD Ken Brown; Jack
Nickolson; and Bayard Temple. I snapped a
nice big picture of most of the Nature
Coast RCers who were there. I mailed it to
Art Lowery who will identify the names. By
the time you get this magazine it will be on
the District Web site at www.modelair.org.
