District V Report - 2004/08

Author: Jim McNeill

Edition: Model Aviation - 2004/08
Page Numbers: 158

I ATTENDED the Western Carolina RC
Spring Fun-Fly at Greenville, South
Carolina. The Western Carolina RC club
was host and sponsor of the affair.
The members were honored with a Club
of the Month award that included a nice tricolored
flag, cloth patches for every
member, and patches for the club members’
families if they want one.
Some of the principal club members who
hosted and officiated the event include (LR)
Pat Snow; Dale Irvine; Robin Sharpe;
James Barr; Tommy Thompson; Steve
Bollinger; Alessandro Luiz; club president
and CD that day, Tom Holmes; Gerhard
Ullman; and Bill Oakes.
I attended the Blue Ridge R/C club’s
Warbirds Over Greenville in Piedmont, South
Carolina. It was a nice day with a good
turnout. Only Warbirds circa 1911-1950 were
featured. The Blue Ridge RC club was
honored with a Club of the Month award.
Pictured here are many of the Blue Ridge
RC club members who helped conduct
and officiate the big three-day fun-fly.
Standing rear (L-R): Dennis Sargent; Tom
Phelps, unidentified; Deborah Satterfield;
Mike Satterfield; club president Gregg
Smith; Steve Hildebrant; Diane Smith; Jay
Gulledge; Jason Pepper; and Everette
Smith. If I learn the names of the two fliers
kneeling in front I’ll report to you later.
(L-R) Mike Satterfield, club vice president;
Gregg Smith, club president and acting
CD; Steve Hildebrant, club secretary;
Dennis Sargent, club treasurer; and
Everette Smith, a former club president.
Here is a perfect example of the type of
models flown. Mike Satterfield and Jay
Gulledge are standing behind their P-40
and P-51 aircraft. The models look like the
full-scale versions and fly realistically.
There are 20 pictures of each of these
South Carolina affairs on your District Web
site at www.modelair.org.
I attended the Flying “C” club’s big threeday
Warbirds Over Alabama fun-fly at
Opelika, Alabama. This club has served the
modeling community for a long time and
provides modelers with a big, flat, grass
field to enjoy their hobby.
On the left are club president Ted Cowen
next to Beverly Cowen. Beverly is the club
treasurer. On the right are Michael and
Barbara Montgomery. Michael is the
club’s field marshall. They are holding a
plaque and flag I awarded them as an
Award of Excellence, the highest award
AMA has for chartered clubs. (This has to
be passed by Council vote.)

Flying model airplanes is a family-oriented hobby. Families like to come to a fun-fly
or contest and sit behind the spectator fence all day and just watch. The casual Sunday
flier has taken over the hobby in sheer numbers and dominates AMA.
Here is a perfect example: the Bishop family. In the front row are Ann, Ginger, and
Brittony Bishop. In the back row are Chuck and Bob Bishop and C.J. is squeezed
in the middle.
Editor’s note: District V Vice President
Jim McNeill passed away at his home on
May 21, 2004. Our condolences to his
family and friends.
Jim served as a member of AMA’s
Executive Council for the past 33 years.
