Report

It's July and I am sitting at my computer writing a report for the month of November. It seems very strange because at this time of the year some of you have put your airplanes away for the winter, and others are pulling your airplanes out to fly. It's also Thanksgiving this month, so remember to be thankful for all that you have. It is the time of the year to start dropping hints to your wife or friends about what you want for Christmas. You know what I mean.

It's also the time of the year for elections in District V. Please remember to send your card back so it can be counted. It is up to the members to elect a vice president for District V. Please send your vote to the proper address and not to AMA Headquarters with your membership renewal. Your ballot will not count if you send it to AMA.

I hope you have had time to check out the new District V Web site at www.amadistrict-5.org. I hope you will make use of the site. I want to thank our new webmaster, Walter Umland, for volunteering his time when I needed help. Thanks to Gene Martine for recommending Walter. Remember, this site can only be as good as you make it, so please send your pictures to [email protected] for the District V Web page.

The site will be broken down into sections because we all like different kinds of flying machines. There will be portions for Indoor, CL, Carrier, Racing, Aerobatics, RC and CL Combat, FF, Scale and Giant Scale, Warbirds, electrics, helicopters, and jets, just to name a few. I hope I did not miss anything. This site will feature the pictures I asked you to send me in my last monthly report. I want you to be able to go to that site and see any type of flying machine.

For sale: We will have a section on the Web site where members in District V can list up to two items that they have for sale. This portion of the site is for AMA members only. The items will be listed for one month only. You are completely responsible for everything you list and sell; District V or AMA will not be responsible for anything you put on the site for sale. You must include your AMA number, name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address and list what you have for sale. Finally, the Web page will list all of the clubs in District V. If you are traveling, check out the site and you will be able to see if there is a flying field in that area. I hope that you will be proud of your new site and use it frequently. I want it to be up and running by the time you get this report. If it is not, please be patient as we eliminate some of the bugs.

I've appointed two people to offices in District V. Dick Tonan, associate vice president (AVP) in Tennessee, is also the RC event coordinator for District V. He will submit the events scheduled for District V to our webmaster so that all approved sanctioned events will appear on our site. Rod Gier, also an AVP, will serve as our safety official. The safety official's position is a new office that I have established in District V. I feel that safety is the most important part of flying. I want the safety officers in the clubs in District V to know that they have a person whom they can call to discuss any type of safety problem or question that may arise. I feel that Rod is qualified for this position. He will have a page on the Web site for safety information.

Congratulations to the Sumter Model Airplane Club in Sumter, South Carolina, for securing a 15-acre tract of private land with a 15-year lease for $1 per year. According to Neal Crotts, the club's president, the landowner has donated between $15,000 and $20,000 in preparation work on the site. That landowner, Tommy Glasscock, owns one of the largest sand and stone quarries in the state, located in Sumter. He bought the land partly as a buffer around his current quarry operations, and partly as a site for possible future mining. We offer a great big thank you to Tommy Glasscock from all of the AMA members in District V for helping the Sumter Model Airplane Club. Thanks for making dreams come true for fliers in Sumter.

I visited my first club as District V VP. I wanted it to be a surprise so I did not tell the club that I was dropping in, and it was a pleasant surprise when I visited the Dixie Aeromasters in Macon, Georgia. The club was having its third annual Make-A-Wish Fun-Fly and the weather was perfect. I met everyone at the fun-fly and they were friendly and made me feel so welcome. The club raised $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Great job, Dixie Aeromasters!

Please remember to send in names with your pictures. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
