District VIII - 2008/08

I ran out of space last month before reporting on a new buddy I met at the South Plains Electric Flyers electric indoor fly-in.

His name is Britton May and he is the 16-year-old brother of the 19-year-old contest director (CD), Reegan May. Britton is a budding helicopter pilot, flying a Blade CX2. He does well with it, but the amazing thing is that he was born with severe medical problems and has undergone at least 14 surgeries to ensure his survival. That has left him with some lifelong challenges, but he meets them head on and has a great personality and outlook. Guys such as Britton make me feel good and make modeling more enjoyable.

Club Sport 40

Racing is really heating up in District VIII. Unfortunately, pictures weren't available (camera problems), but after approximately 10 airplanes and 20 races, Fast Eddie Flesher was the winner in April. He is from Canyon Lake, Texas.

The Tri-City Flyers held the club's first annual "Bipe and Tripe" event in May. While the event was well run and fun, the biggest excitement was that Roger Freeman, owner of Vintage Aviation and Old Kingsbury Aerodrome, was taping a movie using his full-scale Canuck (Canadian Jenny) and a Cub, and then he flew his newly finished full-scale Fokker Dr.I. I even tried to fly the full-scale Dr.I with a transmitter. The triplane was on its fourth flight, and you should have heard and seen the cameras going from all of the modelers.

I have included photos of me trying to fly the Dr.I with a transmitter and pictures of the Pilot's Choice Award winners. Additional pictures, including movies of the full-scale flying, are available on the District VIII website at www.ama-dist-8.org.

John Murphy, newsletter editor for the North Dallas RC Club, reports that the club's recent Boy Scout event had 25 Scouts building AMA Cubs (Delta Darts) and flying RC on the buddy box. The winner of the Delta Dart fly-off won an RTF Aerobird Extreme RC airplane. What a great day for the Scouts and the club members.

Chuck Waller and I attended the Austin RC Society meeting in May to present the AMA President's Award to PowerMaster Fuels for its longtime support of national and international events. Plaques were awarded to Don Nix, the company's original owner, and to Shirley and Wendell Hammond, the current owners.

Have fun and fly safely! See you on the flightline.
