District VIII - 2010/11
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all! Remember our troops around the world as you celebrate!
Personnel and Leadership
Jim Cherry resigned as Executive Director (ED) in August. He is back in Florida where his wife of seven years and his son and grandsons live. He had been away from them nearly four years while serving as ED.
Jim gave us his all, changed the AMA dramatically, and made many friends. I will miss his friendship but wish him Godspeed.
Joyce Hager will again fill the position while the search for and decision about a new ED goes forward. Jim built a strong, talented senior staff that will be his legacy and keep us on course under new leadership.
Club Activities and Demonstrations
Ralph Snow sent me this report:
Thanks to Bill Holliman's coordination, members of the Dallas Electric Aircraft Fliers (DEAF) club demonstrated electric RC flying for Cub Scouts and leaders of BSA Circle 10, Tomahawk District. A good crowd of Scouts attended the demo. Club members' aircraft were used in the talk.
The talk and demonstration were part of the Scouts' day camp held at Rorie Galloway Park in Mesquite, Texas. They flew four park flyers several times and had help from the local hobby shop as well.
Events
Jack Matlock and I attended the Big Bird Fly-In in Bryan, Texas, in July. Louigi Wolfe did a fine job as CD and the 25-plus pilots enjoyed the day. Giant Cubs, electric bombers, and 3-D aerobatic aircraft peacefully coexisted and entertained. They have a very nice facility and their burgers and sausage were excellent too!
Honors and Awards
- Mike Fedor of Arlington, Texas, and Faust Parker were inducted into the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) Hall of Fame at this year's Nats in Muncie, Indiana. Congratulations to both on this prestigious occasion.
- While passing through Oklahoma, I presented the Superior Service Award to Glenn Pannel Jr. for his operation of the District VIII library for more than six years. Glenn and his wife Anna together ran the library operation.
Committee Update
Old news but worth knowing: I have turned chairmanship of the Leader Member Development Committee over to Frank Geisler of Gloucester, Virginia. You probably know him as MUROCFLYER from the forums and the Wings Across America Project. Frank brings a lot of talent and enthusiasm to the position.
If you can help him or have ideas about Leader Member programs, get in touch with him at [email protected].
Closing
Have fun and fly safely. See you on the flightline!
