Writing this in September, with 90° weather, makes it hard to say “hope all have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or a great holiday season.” But I hope you do anyway!
From my newest Associate Vice President (AVP), Cliff Town, comes a report of a fun-fly in my old hometown of Guymon, Oklahoma. I flew my first RC airplane in Guymon in 1957!
Cliff says the turnout was small, but they had lots of fun plus barbecue both days. They had two events on Saturday and a cross-country run on Sunday. You do not realize how fast your model goes until you try to keep up with it from the back of a pickup truck.
Cliff presented a Making a Difference (MAD) award to Jim Renzelman. Jim spends a lot of time helping new modelers get started in modeling.
The 10th Annual Rice Memorial, in memory of my dad, was a tremendous success. Eighty pilots and many spectators enjoyed the RC and CL flying. More than $2,000 in prizes and great weather contributed to its success.
After last year’s record rains, hail, and a tornado that really stopped us cold, this year was very pleasant with light winds and great fellowship. My son Gary CDed once again and did a superb job.
Mark Johnston, AVP from New Mexico, traveled the farthest, coming 850 miles from Albuquerque.
The Pilots’ Choice Award went to Butch McEachern with his 40% Hemple Cub.
Next year, the 11th Annual Rice Memorial Fly-In will be combined with the District VIII celebration of the AMA’s 75th Anniversary. Plan now to attend and enjoy the flying site at Old Kingsbury Aerodrome as well as the scheduled festivities. Watch for more information to follow!
Have fun and fly safely. See you on the flightline!
Jim Rice
