District VIII - 2012/02

Election results

ELECTION RESULTS are in. New AMA President Bob Brown and Executive Vice President (EVP) Gary Fitch will be joined on the Executive Council by several new members.

  • Replacing Gary as District II vice president (VP): Eric Williams
  • Replacing Bob in District III: Mark Radcliff
  • Replacing Bill Oberdieck in District VII: Tim Jesky
  • Replacing Bruce Nelson in District XI: Mike Mosbrooker

All other incumbents remain the same. Your AMA leadership will be quite different in 2012!

Thanks and recognition

I thank Bill and Bruce for their friendship and wisdom throughout the years. I wish you Godspeed in your new endeavors.

To all of the new faces and the familiar faces in new jobs, thanks for accepting the positions; we are facing new challenges that will forever impact modeling!

Bob and Gary are both veterans of the Executive Council and have visions for the future of our organization. Please support them as they begin their new duties and provide them with your ideas and concerns as they lead us into the future.

I want to thank Mark Smith for his many years of service to the Academy as District IX VP, EVP, and as the acting president since April 2011. Mark’s extensive marketing background and organizational skills will be missed! He is ready to retire here, in District VIII, in Arkansas. If you run across Mark, Bill, or Bruce, please thank them for volunteering time and energy to better our organization.

FAA NPRM — call to action

February is the month for the long-awaited Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) to be released by the FAA. If it is released, I ask each reader of this column to energize your modeling friends, family, neighbors, and anyone else to assist in our efforts to nullify, or at least lessen, the impact of that rule on aeromodeling.

Please:

  • Visit the AMA website at www.modelaircraft.org for updates.
  • Watch your email for information on how to become involved in this effort.
  • Share information and encourage others to participate in advocacy actions.

Rich Hanson and his work group continue to discuss the issue with the FAA. They have a two-day, face-to-face meeting scheduled at the AMA EXPO in Ontario, California, in January 2012. Hopefully that will help finalize the efforts to prepare for the NPRM.

News and events

Jason Cunningham sent a photo of Billy Langford, president of Model Aviators of South Arkansas, and Dale Gleason, the 2010 Profile Stunt Champion, presenting the 2011 trophy to Mike Donovan.

Winter maintenance and safety

Winter is upon us, so it is a good time to get those new projects finished and do maintenance on the aircraft and support equipment you intend to use when the weather allows. The safety of your aircraft and others at the flying site depends on you doing these things well. Be thorough and picky as you inspect or build!

If you live where you do not have a distinct building/maintenance season, I suggest you still find time to do your own inspection and maintenance to keep everything up to speed.

Have fun and fly safely. See you on the flightline!
