District VIII - 2015/01

On September 25-26, 2014, we had our annual District VIII Celebration of Flight in Kingsbury, Texas, sponsored by the Tri-City Flyers. The club did a great job with the event again this year. We had a bit of rain on Saturday, but still got lots of flying in on both days. We had nine District X associate vice presidents in attendance as well as AMA President Bob Brown and Rich Hanson, Dave Mathewson, and Ilona Maine from AMA Headquarters.
During the lunchtime memorial on Saturday, Jim Rice conducted the honors and moment of silence as well as making a flight afterward with Dave Mathewson.
On Saturday evening we had the District X Membership meeting with Rich talking to everyone about the latest news on the FAA situation. After the meeting, we had a barbecue provided by District VIII and cooked by Red Ritch.
I nominated Jim Rice early in the year for the AMA Model Aviation Hall of Fame with help from his family and a few others. During the meeting, Dave, Bob, Rich, and I presented Jim with the award.

Frank Simas spoke at the event. I presented Frank with a Making a Difference (MAD) award for his work with the event.

So many people worked hard on the event that I gave the club an award for its hard work.

I want to thank everyone for coming to the event and supporting both the Tri-City Flyers and the District VIII Celebration of Flight. I would also like to thank Red Ritch’s Raiders BBQ Team for cooking the Saturday night feast again this year. It is something everyone enjoys!

I am looking for a new Control Line/Free Flight contest coordinator for the district. If you or someone you know is interested in the position, please contact me to discuss it.

Tony Breyen, Brian Toleos, Bill McLaughlin, Robert Ferguson, Jan Welsh, Fred Welsh, Allen Delger, Barry Walters, and Ed Kranz.

Tony Breyen attended the Richardson RC Club’s event in Richardson, Texas, Sunday October 26th, 2014. It was a charity event benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project, Allen Community Outreach, and the Branch Volunteer Fire Department.
Ed Kranz did a great job as emcee. It was a wonderful day with a fantastic turnout! Be sure to put this two-day event on your list for next year.

Gaines Smith received a MAD award presented by Bill Holland. The event was rained out, but 20 pilots still came out to visit.

Hope to see you all at the field![dingbat]
