District X

The e-mails I have been receiving and the discussions I have been involved in during the last few weeks have been really good. The membership — meaning you — has been responding favorably to the many things the AMA as an organization is doing and to the things your district officers, including your associate vice presidents (AVPs) and me as your interim District X vice president, are doing for our district clubs and members.

The organization, as always, is implementing new programs and finding more benefits for the members. Your AVPs and I have been busy as well. We are delivering all awards and grants in person now; perhaps we came to your club.

There are new changes to the district website, and getting more popular with each issue is the District X newsletter. If you have not seen this new publication, please visit www.ama10.org.

A member photo page is new to the website as well, so please send your favorite picture of yourself and your latest creation, or an aerial shot of your club field. All will be displayed on the new page.

Now let’s look at a report from your AVP, Tim Attaway.

Menifee Valley Flyers Get a Helping Hand

One of the very deserving clubs in District X is nestled in a nice valley surrounded by Hemet, Sun City, Moreno Valley, and Winchester, California. The club had experienced some hardship with regard to its runway and the way it was put in, and had to remove some of the material that had been used.

Ray Gould and his executive board were elected to put things right, and one of the first steps was to request some funding to get over the hump. Dave Mathewson, AMA president, became very interested in the welfare of this vibrant club. He called repeatedly to find out how things were progressing and suggested the club file for assistance from the AMA.

Ray and his board filed the proper paperwork with Vice President of District X Michael Brown, who got involved and helped the Menifee Valley Flyers receive a check for $1,000.

As an AVP for District X and living fairly close, I was selected to deliver the check to the club. After looking up the club’s website, I found they were having their general meeting on June 19. I contacted Ray and was invited to attend the meeting.

The trip up was roughly 90 miles from my home in San Diego, and it was a pleasant drive. The flying site was on a raised portion overlooking the valley, and when I pulled up I noticed a large number of club members chatting and hanging out around the clubhouse shade structure.

Introductions were made and I met all of the key leaders of the club. During the meeting the presentation from the AMA was made and the club seemed very appreciative of the contribution. It was a real pleasure to get to know more about this club.

The Menifee Valley Flyers club has big plans to hold events, expand membership, and offer the public an outstanding place to assemble, socialize, and fly model aircraft. Shortly after the meeting, I took out one of my electric airplanes and flew a celebratory flight at the Menifee Valley Flyers’ flying site. Thanks again for the hospitality!
