District X Report - 2012/05

The First Weedwackers Aerosquadron of Lakeside, California, has been one of the leading model clubs in San Diego since 1976. This year marked a momentous occasion for the club when it was awarded 10 straight years as a Gold Leader Club — the longest-running Gold Leader Club in San Diego County. The Leader Club program is a great way to involve your club in community service and accomplish a lot of great things. If your club hasn’t considered becoming a Leader Club, take some time to look at the program on the AMA’s website. AMA Hall of Fame Chairman Jerry Neuberger presented the award to the Weedwackers at a recent club meeting. Thank you, Jerry, and congratulations to the Weedwackers.

I am pleased to announce that Howard Kennedy has volunteered to serve as the Contest Coordinator for Arizona and Utah. He is a dedicated scale modeler and a proud officer of the One Eighth Air Force club. Howard’s contact information can be found at the bottom of this page. Thanks again, Howard.

Our Phoenix-area Associate Vice President, Roger Willis, sent in a recap of the 2012 Southwest Regionals Model Airplane Championships. This year’s event was blessed with relatively mild drift and moderate weather. It was a large regional with three separate flightlines: AMA/Society of Antique Modelers (SAM), FAI, and RC electric, flown over three days of events. The lines were spread out over the Eloy, Arizona, flying site and were under the control of separate CDs.

The AMA/SAM line was managed by CD Al Lidberg and assisted by John Patton and Greg Tutmark. There was lots of action on this flightline with fliers from around the world. Roger flew in the Jimmie Allen event along with great Flying Aces pilots such as Herb Kothe from Colorado and Jim Seamster from Gilbert, Arizona.

The FAI events were run by CD Peter Brocks and were loaded with talent. On Sunday the Towline Glider event was in full swing and a sight to behold. The electric RC events were managed by a father-and-son team, Bob and Walter Angus. This series of events follows the SAM events but uses electric RC as the power source. This is a wonderful contest to see in person, so if you find yourself in Arizona next January, come to Eloy to enjoy some fun and friendship among the modelers who make the Southwest Regionals a must-see event.
