District XI - 2006/08

Author: Bruce Nelson

Edition: Model Aviation - 2006/08
Page Numbers: 163

EACH SPRING during the first week of
June, fliers from both sides of the border
congregate at Sandy Point near Salmon
Arm, British Columbia, for a rite of spring.
This is one of the largest float-flys in the
Northwest that I know of and has been going
on for nearly two decades at different
locations in this area.
Dave Collis, Vancouver, British Columbia,
flies this 14-foot Albatross with two G62s.
Dave also flies this 1/2-scale Space Walker
powered by a DA-150.
I prepare to launch my Ugly Stick with my
Four Star 60 in the foreground. In the
background is the rescue barge—much
better than trying to use a boat for big
aircraft.
Dave Collis prepares to launch the Albatross.
It’s a rare sight: a Gee Bee on floats. I don’t
believe it got off the water.
This Custom Privateer is a great float-flier. If
anyone knows where to obtain plans, please
let me know.
Ray Care’s Unionville Beaver flies well on the
water and off land.
My Cub, seen here on wheels, spends most
of its time on floats. It’s a great flier with an
O.S. 120.
This event will be held again on the first
weekend of September at the same place, or
you could come up the week before and
attend the fun-fly at Vernon, British
Columbia, approximately 30 miles to the
south. It’s another great event.
I am sure once you visit either one you will
come back. I have—22 times!
